What a mixed bag of reviews for this train journey on TA! Well, we loved the toy train journey and travelled from Ooty, the hill station at 2,600m to Matupalayem at 314m. Our train departed at around 1pm and we travelled in January. Our tickets had been pre-booked by Audley travel and although we had first class tickets, there was... More

Chugging along the joy train, or was it the toy train? Hop off at Ooty for a quick cup of tea and head right back. The journey itself was well worth it

During peak seasons, do make a reservation in www.irctc.co.in as it is difficult to get seats in it.

While traveling from Coonoor, choose the window seats towards your right. The best views are on the right-side. There is only one reserved coupe and it gets filled fast. General class is not bad but can get crowded. On the plus side, the ticket is only for 5 bucks.

do not miss to ride this historic train atleast from ooty to coonoor or vice versa. The 9:00 am train that leaves ooty is a best option to go to coonoor, visit all the important points of visit and then get back by the 4:30 pm train to be back in ooty. One can even stay in coonoor which could... More

We were really looking forward to the Nilgiri Blue Mountain Railway trip as we had seen it on TV, but we were slightly disappointed. Maybe we had built it up too much in our minds, A lot of the stunning scenerey is blocked by trees, so you don't get many of the anticipated great views. Here is a tip though.... More

The toy-train ride from Mettupalaiyam to Ooty is really a joy ride and takes about 5.5 hours (a bit too long) considering by road it takes only 1.5 hours. You need to board Nilgiri Express at 8pm from Chennai Central to reach Mettupalaiyam as it is the only train going to MTP. It reaches MTP at 5 in the morning... More

The Steam train was only used to shunt the carriages into place in Coonor station, otherwise it's a diesel. Sitting on the left side of the train may give some better views but that is debatable. From other travellers who had done the whole journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty then the Mettupalayam to Coonor section may be a bit more... More
