- Dirk WAlexandra Headland, Australia6,464 contributionsIndia's #1The temples of Khajuraho warrant a special trip. International tourists really have not discovered this gem to the extent that it deserves. In my humble opinion, it should be India's most famous attraction. You can spend days walking around, admiring all this "poetry in stone". It is a trap for a photographer, because there are so many exquisite small scenes that it is impossible to capture them all. The sheer quality, the elegance, dignity and erotic appeal is simply overwhelming.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2023
- Lizzyp_13oaawLondon, United Kingdom47 contributionsFascinating place to visitThe temples are fascinating and there are many to see. They are very unique. My only suggestion would be to have the ticket cover two days so they can be visited more slowly, I highly recommend local guide Anand Tiwari (91 98931 51427) - he was lots of fun to spend the day with, he's extremely knowledgeable and explained everything very clearly, and he took us around all the sights without rushing at all. Definitely book Anand as your guide in KhajurahoVisited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 March 2023

- Marjorie BAustralia9 contributionsUnexpected amazing trip discovering a gem of IndiaThis is an undiscovered gem by international tourists. The temples designated an UNESCO Heritage site are in fabulous condition and when we went hardly anyone was there. We were so lucky to find the most knowledgeable guide there. We had the marvelous Dr Anad Tiwari as our guide. He did not rush us, but he took time to tell us about the history of these wonderful temples and was able to show us the scultpures that we would have missed but for him. He is fascinating and a great storyteller. It would be wise to contact him to book as he is in demand from Government agencies when they have visitors such as the G20. His phone no: is +91 989 3151 427. Afterwards we ate at the Rajah Cafe upstairs overlooking the temples with a beautiful view The Rajah Cafe had the best coffee milkshakes made I am told from buffalo milk.Visited March 2023Written 7 April 2023

- SirajBilbao, Spain1 contributionKhajurajo: temples and native people. Los templos y su gente, hoyI had a wonderful experience in Khajuraho. Its temples are marvellous: they show you up a very unique understanding of spirituality and social life. The outside walls are decorated with amazing sculptures and arquitecture; and the inside with the silent and softly luminuos space of the God or Godess. All this was possible thanks to the help of a tuc tuc driver called Pramod (+91 9893180202) who drove me kindly from place to place and gave me the proper explanación and conntacts to enjoy fully. Thanks Pramod. God bless you! Gracias a Pramod (+91 9893180202) conductor de tuc tuc que me proveyó de una ayuda y contactos imprescindibles para disfrutar de lleno de los templos y de su increíble mensaje social y espiritual. Western group of temples has about 11 temples and takes about 3 hours to cover them - get a guide (costs about Rs. 2000). The architecture is priceless. Hard to believe that even 1000 years ago, our land was so advanced. One just kept clicking. Eastern group of temples are scattered - the ones in Jain temple must be seen but with a guide. Full of beautiful temples with historical significance. All temples within 4-5 km radius from city. Mostly from 10th-12th century. Generally in good condition. Escaped Moghul vandalism because they are deep in forest area. Spend as much time as possible on West group of temples. Not much in Eastern and Southern group. Sunset at Shiva temple is a spectacular sight to see fading sunlight illuminating Shiva idol from feet upto face. Do not miss Raneh waterfall. Two clear days good enough.

We went to Khajuraho to see the Dance Festival. Few tips for future travellers! Festival venue entrance is different from regular temple entrance. Though the event is free, collect VIP passes before entering the venue for better row of seats. Passes are available at the huge exhibition area near the venue entrance. Normal passes are available there which is not required actually as it is free for all. Try to get VIP passes. They are available in a stall near the venue entrance gate, little tucked away. There is no guarantee that they will give the passes. Staff will assess you and take a decision.
With the VIP passes you can at least get to the 1st section of the seating arrangements demarcated as VIP! Go at least 1 or 2 hours before the show. Seats in the centre line of the stage is ideal. Locate that 1st. The area fills up quickly with VIP proxies holding seats for their bosses!!

The monument holds a profound historical significance, requiring a nuanced understanding to truly appreciate its value beyond the common perception. Delving into the diverse religious perspectives and decoding the architectural messages embedded within is essential for a comprehensive experience.
Our visit coincided with the Dance Festival, amplifying the enchantment of the surroundings to extraordinary levels. It was a mesmerizing experience that exceeded all expectations. The rhythmic beats of the dancers and the vibrant colors added an additional layer of magic to the already awe-inspiring atmosphere.
Undoubtedly, this destination belongs on the bucket list of anyone seeking to immerse themselves in history, art, and culture. An opportunity not to be overlooked, as it offers a unique blend of historical richness and cultural vibrancy that leaves a lasting impression.

Following advice from another review I contacted Siasanan (9755505508) to organise a day tour of the temples. He was busy, but passed me on to his colleague Ghanshyam (9981295637).
I’m very pleased I made that contact. Ghanshyam is an excellent guide - easy to understand, likeable and very professional. He organised extremely comfortable transport and gave me a very full day where we found time to visit all of the temple complexes as well as an astonishing nearby gorge - India’s answer to the Grand Canyon.
His explanations were clear and meant I got much more out of my visit than I would have done had I tried to make the trip alone.
I thoroughly recommend both of these gentlemen.

Tips to tourists driving their own vehicle/taxi
1. Beware of the parking scam! People would try to con you to pay for municipal parking of ₹50/- at the gates of the Western temple complex, where parking is free within the gates of the premises. And they run away after taking the money when you realise that the parking is free
2. Loads of scammer tour guides will try to stop your vehicles and force their services on you, even if you don't want them, for ₹500/ and above, showing their fake IDs etc. You don't need them, as govt guided tours already available at a mere ₹100 charge, with well informed guides.
3. Street hawker scams, loads of people will try to con you into buying stuff and souvenir at higher prices, and even stalk you till you get anything from them. However just walk into any souvenir shop in the area, and buy what you want.
Summary: Khajuraho is a peaceful place, excellent sites to explore and very friendly locals. So u just need to goto the temple complex, get in the gates, without paying a single penny, but a ₹35 ticket per head, and enter the guided tour. Guides within the temple complex range from ₹100-200, and that's enough! Don't pay for parking or anything extra anywhere.

These temples are not easy to reach…3 hours by private taxi from Jhansi. (4,500 each way). But they are worth it.
We had an excellent official guide, Siasanan Shula (9755505508) for a half day tour of the Western Temples. 1800 rupees + entrance fee. His English is excellent, he knew the temples well and he told us about modern day India too. Informative, but not pushy. Highly recommended and we would never have understood it so well without a guide. (He speaks Spanish too)
Our taxi driver Bablu (9839404887) was a safe and careful driver. We were very happy with him and would recommend him highly. He can pick up fromJhansi station. He also has good English.

Hello Climber40,
Both Khajuraho sites are safe, green, full of butterflies and very interesting to visit. I suppose your question is about the Kama-Sutra & bestiality carvings.
First these scenes are just a few percent of the total of carvings.
In the chandela-dynasty sex was ment as religion, as an art of concentration ...
Some scenes were not ment to be seen by every body. So the temples are built up in layers. Explicit scenes are often on higher levels.
My general advice is you take a local guide (dr. Anand Tiwari is perfect for the job) and explain him that you don't want to see the explicit sex scenes.
It will be a very interesting visit for yourself and your kid of 14!

Hi Guys. I am planning to visit KHAJURAHO in mid August. Is it a good time to visit considering the rains ?
Also i hope the temples are not closed during monsoons, we really dnt mind visiting in rains as well.
How much time will it take to visit? I am reaching khajuraho station at 2pm...so should i plan to visit that day itself... Say 3 to 6pm or the next day early morning?
Is there any other places to visit IN and around khajuraho?
I'll be there for 2 days.
Need your suggestions.
Thank u in advance.

Visit the western temples after your arrival in the town and the see the evening show the same evening. The day after you should visit Orchha. It will probably take the whole day considering that you will find plenty of places to visit there, including the Rama rites in the evening and the duration of the round trip by car.
