On our itinerary but not a great fan of museums. The rigmarole to enter is somewhat severe and the lady guide, although knowledgeable, is very strict and off-putting at first. However, this collection of beautiful old wall hangings, costumes and furnishings has to be seen. Admission is limited so ensure you book a visit.

Few museums anywhere on earth can boast of a textile collection as important as Ahmedabad's famed Calico museum, established by the philanthropic Sarabhai family who brought such important 20th-century architects as Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn to Ahmedabad. The collection is superb, the museum itself a rambling old building that used to be the family's home, with additions in the... More

If you're a fabric and textile enthusiast, this tour is a must. However, it's best to focus on the collection and not expect any smiles or friendly interactions from the guide....not even an introduction. Somehow the whole tour felt more like a strict teacher leading a group of errant school kids on a field trip accompanied by guards who go... More

I never got to see this museum, which was a great disappointment for me, since it was one of the major reasons I went to Ahmedabad. You must book your reservation (you can do so on line) well in advance. I was in Ahmedabad for four days, and called them my first day. The museum was booked for a week.... More

It was too controlling for a free citizen.the glorious history of textiles can be found elsewhere too in a very open atmosphere.right from the start to the end we were controlled by our guide who i am truly sorry to say did not know much about it.

It is hard to believe; that this museum is completely free. Excellent textile collection from past centuries. Unbelievable, setup. Very high standards for considering this is a museum in India. It is supported by Sarabhai Foundation. The guides are very knowledgeable. Note they only take a limited no of people for each session. So reservation is needed. Worthwhile for museum goers!... More

Unlike many museums where you can walk in the moment you arrive, here one needs prior appointment as entry is restricted to just a few visitors per day. There is a reason for that. The exhalation and perspiration of visitors causes moisture levels to rise which has a threshold level beyond which the condition of museum artifacts (mainly the antique... More
