Mandalay Fort and Mandalay Hill dominate the city .. and it won't be far-fetched to say that they define this former imperial city. The Palace inside the fort is a replica. But walk along the ramparts where you can (large parts of the fort is out of bounds to visitors as it is still used by the Army .. Tatmadaw)....

Your taxi or motorbike driver will drop you at the east entrance in the large external wall by the moat, as he is not allowed inside. From here you have a 20min hot walk to the inner buildings or, for a few Kyat you can get another motorbike driver to take you there, wait and return you. Believe me it...

Mandalay Fort, or Palace Citadel, provides a very rare, maybe even unique, feature to the centre of a city. Four 3 metre thick walls, each 2 kilometres long forming a square, surrounded on all sides by a 64 metre wide moat, cannot fail to dominate a city.
