A wonderful and interesting hiking trail suitable for all ages. It is well marked on easy walking terrain. The trail takes you through a few small villages before concluding at a seaside village where there are lovely seafood restaurants. It is a point-to-point trail and if you do not want to walk back, you can catch a ferry back to Hong Kong Island.

Lamma has a wonderful old-world island village atmosphere and some great easy hiking trails. The most popular hike is the Family Trail which takes you up and over the island from Sok Kwu Wan to Yung Shue Wan.
Ferries go to both villages so you can arrive at one end of the island, hike over the island and catch the ferry home from there. It works equally well whichever way you do it. Although it is worth noting that the seafood restaurants are better at Sok Kwu Wan and the ferries are more frequent from Yung Shue Wan.
For this reason, we prefer to start with lunch at Sok Kwu Wan, then do the hike so that we end up at Yung Shue Wan. In this way, we don't have to watch the time and we never have to wait very long for a ferry home.
The Hiking Trail is well sign-posted and there are several large boards along the route that show the same map and also indicate the sights. For the most part, it is a paved concrete path with some steps but there are no difficult stretches or horribly steep sections. If you start at Sok Kwu Wan, there is a long uphill stretch at first but this is the only steep-ish part. Overall, it’s an easy walk and very manageable for children. You should allow around an hour.
The walk is not isolated and in fact on a Sunday, it’s almost the reverse and can be too crowded.
A lovely lookout and pavilion just near the Kamikaze caves is worth stopping at. The views across the harbour are panoramic. However if you see a sign for another pavilion down a small side-path, don't bother following it. This one is completely overgrown and has no view at all (just a lot of steps).
Along the way, you will see the Kamikaze Cave and Tin Hau temples. The temple at Sok Kwu Wan is the most interesting because it has a rare and freakish giant oar fish on display. You will also pass Hung Shing Ye Beach, the main beach where you can stop for a drink or buy ice creams, frozen pineapple on a stick, water and other snacks. There is a large public changing room and toilet block.
GETTING TO LAMMA: Public ferries run regularly every day from Central Pier 4. No need to book ahead because you can buy your ticket at the machines near the gate or use an Octopus card. Ferries are much more frequent to/from Yung Shue Wan and take 20 min. The Sok Kwu Wan ferry takes about 25 min. Tickets vary in price depending on which ferry and whether it's a Sunday or public holiday but they are around $20 HKD each way for an adult.

The Lamma Island Family Walk is a roughly 5 km point-to-point trail between Yung Shui Wan and Sok Kwun Wan that is almost entirely paved, easy to follow and family-friendly. The trail is marked throughout, passes through a handful of small village areas and includes plenty of minor sights, good scenery and viewpoints.

Most begin the trail from the Yung Shui Wan village in the northwest of Lamma and make way south and then east to Sok Kwun Wan. However, you can just as easily do this hike in reverse. There is regular ferry service to Hong Kong Island from both ends as well as plenty of food and drink options. There are public toilets at various stops along the trail and lots of rest points at various beaches and viewpoints.

Popular stops along the trail include the Tin Hau Temple at Yung Shui Wan, Hung Shing Yeh Beach, Lo So Shing Beach, Kamikaze Cave, Tin Hau Temple at Sok Kwun Wan. It is also worth spending time at both Yung Shui Wan and Sok Kwun Wan as well. As mentioned, you'll pass a few viewpoints along the way, these sometimes include traditional Chinese style pavilions where you can rest up a bit and enjoy nice seaside scenery.

Overall, the Lamma Island Family Walk is rather easy, making it good for families and those more interested in leisure hikes that you can take at a slower pace. A straight walk through will take no more than an hour or so. However, allow several hours or more if you plan to taken in the various attractions and spend time at any of the beaches along the route.

...that, whilst not giving you a great view over the whole island, will introduce you to the main villages on Lamma and has some very picturesque points along the way.

Caught the ferry to Yung Shue Wan, this is a small bustling town, worth a little wander.
We then found the trail to Sok Kwu Wan, stopped off at Hung Shing Ye Beach for a comfort break, the beach was ok with a glorious view of the power station! Loved the bathing sign about the sharks! We then carried on to Lo So Shing Beach which is superb to sit and swim and chill out. Had a nice long leisurely lunch at Rainbow Seafood and then caught the ferry back to Central Pier.
Very good half or full day out.

Great hike from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan on Lamma Island! Beautiful butterflies, amazing foliage, etc. Sincerely enjoyed this hike! I hiked from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan to the beach where turtles breed and then back to Yung Shue Wan. Hiked about 10 miles. Really enjoyed it!

Best option is to use an offline app with maps, like the free maps.me
Then you can try a lot of different path (no concrete....!) away from the classical one described everywhere.
Note that using this I found that the wonderful small beach of Tit sha long was accessible (part is « jungle » small path). There was NO body, and it was during lantern festival ...wonderful to have this beautiful beach for yourself
Paths at south to go to the turtle beach (no tracks seen and forbidden to go on the beach itself) are also partly « jungle » paths, sometimes difficult to pass.
On north, small paths more east than the classical one are ok and better views than the classical concrete one.
Note that there are now boots from Aberdeen to Yung shue wan

This hike took only an hour and was very scenic. I loved the hike but it was very hot in July. I had a cap on and that helped a bit.

I took the ferry from Hong Kong Central to Yung Shue Wan on a rainy day and had the most amazing hike over to Sok Kwu Wan, where I took the ferry back to Central. It took about 1.5 hours, and even in the rain, it was a wonderful experience. I can only imagine what it would be like on a clear day. The villages at both ends of the trail are charming and quaint -- with a surprising number of expats who seem to live on the island -- and the trail is very well maintained from start to finish. The views from the high point looking down to Sok Kwu Wan are impressive, and you can see across to Aberdeen and other places on the south shore of Hong Kong Island. I liked Lamma Island so much that I could see staying here for a few days on a future trip to Hong Kong. It's a whole other world from the hustle and bustle of the city and you feel like you are on a remote and tranquil island where you can relax and chill out completely. If you come over to do the hike, I would recommend that you make sure you know when the ferries leave from Sok Kwu Wan because they are a bit less frequent and you could get stuck over in that village for a couple of hours if you don't time it just right. I lucked out and just managed to catch the ferry a minute before it left!

We enjoyed our day trip to Lamma, and this walk, however, we were bitten by insects on our legs, (? sandflies) and are still suffering very itchy bites.
