Reading reviews of various travelers, I find them vary form excellent to poor. It seems that they don’t visit the same place. From experience I would recommend certified places that would give a brief presentation first of making papyrus in ancient Egypt with a friendly shopping experience option. Registered place could be secure when it comes to quality paper and... More

The prices are on the goods, and their beauty and craftmanship is enough to secure a sale! Every visitor to Egypt should take home this lasting souvenir to grace the walls at home. More

A genuine painted papyrus is indeed a fantastic memory of a trip to Egypt. They’re beautiful. The cheaper versions sold in the streets are made of banana skin – but let someone explain to you in situ how to tell the difference, it’s easy once you’re told – and therefore get the more expensive but genuine thing at the institute... This is 1 of the only shops that uses real papyrus not banana leaf sheets. If of course the workers who make it are to be believed. They speak decent English though not enough to get a joke - when the woman explaining about the papyrus said when in other shops ask if you can hold it up to the... More

On tour I was taken to the Papyrus Institute in Cairo not having a choice in the matter. Our group was given a demonstration of how papyrus is turned into paper and then ample time to shop with a salesperson tagging closely. However, I did find a picture that I purchased and at home had it framed. Once framed it... More

It was very expensive but the workmanship appeared to be professional. A great educational opportunity for the younger generation to actually see the process of how papyrus is made. The children in our tour group were even allowed to repeat the process themselves after the demonstration and keep a sliver of the papyrus. We were able to purchase a blank... More

It was [---] and overpriced!!! They follow you around waiting for you to buy something. Fair enough the papyrus paintings were good, but too expensive for what they are. Also you are unable to simply buy an unpainted piece of papyrus. More
