The building is lovely and the exhibits are really fascinating but hard to piece together the historical aspects if you don't speak Vietnamese. The main sections of text in English are the brief descriptions of the individual pieces. The prehistoric man section was very interesting however and was in English also. Overall worth a look but as a tourist it... More

Hi, This museum is on just a couple of floors only. Admission being 25,000 dong or just over a $1. It features prehistoric man and relics on the ground floor and the various potteries and tools they used as well as a walk through the evolutionary process. It also has various finds from excavations around Vietnam. It is well laid... More

We spent a couple of hours in the museum on our first morning in Vietnam. It was a gentle and cheap introduction to some of the older history of the country. Most of the displays had descriptions in English. As many other reviewers have said the highlight is the building itself. Fine for a short visit, but not brilliant. More

LOGISTICS With walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake and in close proxmity to the Opera house the history museum features a beautiful French/Chinese inspired building filled with numerous Vietnamese artifacts from early to modern eras. I would recommend you do it as part of a larger walking tour of the city featuring Old quarter sites (Ngoc Son, Memorial house, Bach... More

This place filled up an hour or so, and is mostly a display of ceramics, wood carvings, champa, and prehistoric art. It's not the most thrilling museum, but coupled with the Museum of Vietnamese Revolution across the road, it filled up a morning. More

Located adjacent to the Opera House and within easy walking distance from Hoan Kiem Lake, the Vietnam History Museum is an inexpensive way to see a collection of Vietnamese artifacts from the country's early days. The museum's permanent collection is a eclectic mix of prehistoric artifacts (stone axes and the like), a large number of bronze drums, a few Buddhist... More

One of the reasons for visiting this museum is to enter the wonderful French Oriental building it is housed in. Another is its quite well curated collection, much more attuned to its subject than the Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi which is also housed in a former French Colonial building. The car park contains a paved exterior exhibition which is... More

Beautiful building with cheap entry (take your student card if you have one, they do a concession rate) but fairly average displays - the ground floor is mainly pots and jars from various eras! Top floor is a bit more lively, some interesting weapons and wooden carvings, but not enthralling unless you have a particular interest in that type of... More
