We took Avola cruise - Day trip package, which was recommended by the hotel, and it was excellent. First class service all the way. We had a feast onboard the boat, to the bay, and it wasnt packed with people. Our guide spoke good english.

I don't think one has completely seen Vietnam if you don't do the Halong cruise.
We travelled with our kids, 3,6,7 and 11. The bus trip from Hanoi was rather bumpy because of bad roads and potholes. It took 3hrs and the bus stopped midway for a break.
We were greeted on the ship with welcome drinks and chilled towels....

Some reviews say it's too touristy/crowded, don't go. But it's popular for a reason! The one-day tour is a little tight, but you get to see the countryside along the way, and if one day is all you have (like me), it's worth the drive. Four hours is enough for a lovely lunch cruise around the bay plus a walk...
