I am (almost) 50 and came to HI for the first time to celebrate my 50th birthday. I wanted to hike this trail and we did it. I stopped exercising in November and have been out of shape since then. Before that, I rode my stationary bike 4x/week for about 45 min. so certainly not a fitness freak. I've also... More

A gem in the paradise. Of course the trail is really a trek: I mean hard. We do twice with 5 years between and it s always the same dream. The view are beautiful and the landscape gorgeous . You have in all events think to: good shoes ( slippery when wet) water +++, and a lunch and time.......

We are mid-fifties couple that hikes regularly in the Sandias, including the La Luz trail. This hike is nothing like what we were used to. First, for those coming from high desert such as New Mexico and Colorado, you notice an abundance of air. We never got winded. But, the climbs are steep and can be tricky. The hike rewards... More

If you enjoy backpacking in scenic locations, than don't hesitate to hike the 11 miles out to Kalalau beach (22 mile round trip). You will be hiking right along the unbelievable scenic Na Pali coast. The vistas come one after another and you won't get tired of them. I don't think there is a trail like this on the mainland... More

My boyfriend (who is also 50) and I only did the first two miles in to the beach and back - but that was a great adventure for us. My hand is in a cast due to a tendon injury but we were still able to get back before the heavy rains started. It took us about 1.5 hours to... More

As virtually every review notes, this is a spectacular trail. My husband and I hiked the first two miles to Hanakapi'ai Beach and returned to Ke'e Beach (4 miles round trip). We left about 8:30am in Mid April and had amazing weather, very little cloud cover. As others have mentioned, this is a difficult hike. It is steep and slippery,... More

My spouse and and I have hiked this trail twice - the first time, we had difficulty making the entire trek because it was quite muddy. The second time, we made it all the way and while exhausting, it was a wonderful experience. Being afraid of heights, I had to swallow hard several times as we made our way to... More

We had heard horror stories about this trail, but I imagine most of those come from trying to hike it when it is wet. I wouldn't attempt that. Many steep places on the trail are naturally paved with flat stones, that get covered with silt and mud. If it is dry- great. If not, bring climbing gear. You won't have... More

We did the whole trail to Kalalau valey and its cool. Everyone should try at least the 2 mile walk. 2 miles - takes longer than you think. Take better shoes and a lot of water. Trail is nice, if you are afraid of hights, walk carefully, but the trail is wide enough, so no worries even if you do... More

My partner and I hike a fair bit, but I wouldn't say we are serious mountain climbers. This hike was steep and difficult, but if you have relatively good fitness then it's no problem. Absolutely bring plenty of water!!! Some people were hiking with kids, which I wouldn't recommend unless you are walking only to Hanakapi'ai Beach. After the beach... More
