The most famous place for every latvian and guests of Latvia. Master Karlis Zale. I would recomend to the Brorther's Cemetery too. You will feel how proud we are about our history.
The monument itself, commemorating 1919 freedom fighters, is OK (comments linking it to Paris are a bit over-enthusiastic), but spend a few moments watching the serious soldiers marching slowly in dress gear (not to mention the nearby soldier in camouflage fatigues and assault rifle eyeing strollers). Their concentration is impressive.
You can't miss it on your way to the Old Town. I really liked the two soldiers who marched back and forth in front of the monument. It was almost like identical twins - same move, same steps..
This monument is in the middle the most beautiful parks. By going here I realized why Riga has been called as Paris. Really the best part of Riga.
It is a very pretty and elegant monument and it is in a beautiful setting. The Latvian people are very proud of it and they should be. It is very easy to walk to. Make a point to see it.
There are two soldiers / guards of honor, changing every 30 or 60 minutes, so try to be there for the change of the guards. Many flowers are around the freedom monument which is an important place for the people.
