In January 2012 I escorted 24 of my Wofford College students, only a few of whom were science majors, on a two-week tour of New Zealand. Our trip included a two-night stay on Stewart Island, where we were led on an all-day hike through its nature trails and those of its smaller sister, Ulva Island. “Ruggedy Range Wilderness Experience” directed... Furhana has a wealth of knowledge about Stewart Island. She was very helpful and obviously enjoys sharing this special part of the world with others. Furhana tailor made for us an overview of Oban and surrounds followed by a short walk along the start of the Raikiura NP to Little river. We were quite excited seeing kiwi footprints and poo... More

Furhana Ahmed met us as we disembarked from the ferry at Oban. We were so impressed by the guiding services offered by her company, ‘Ruggedy Range Wilderness Experience’, and particularly by her flexibility, enthusiasm and friendly manner, that we immediately arranged to visit Ulva Island next day with a small group. Furhana tailored the tour according to the interests and... More

Having been advised by the DOC that the Raikura walk would take 3 days, I was advised that with the 2 days I had I should get a water taxi to the start of the second day hike (an an approximate cost of $70) then walk from there. Taking their advice I headed off the Ruggedy Range to get a... More

In late March I visited Stewart Island, not having planned anything out in advance. What can I say, I was spoiled by New Zealand's i-Site network! When I arrived at the Stewart Island DOC office to organize a day hike or two I was told I needed to take a water taxi to access any of the more scenic locations... More

I agree with the 3 visitors preceding me. Furhana gave us an excellent van tour of the island, not leaving anything out. We felt we had a better grasp of Stewart Island after her knowledgeable tour. More

We had a wonderful guided tour of Ulva Island, off Stewart Island in New Zealand, in February 2012 with Furhana Ahmad of Ruggedy Range tours. Furhana was very knowledgeable and professional and showed us rare birds such as the NZ Saddleback which we would probably have walked past without her skills. More

I can't say enough about how hard Furhana will work on your behalf for the birds you come to Stewart and Ulva Islands to see. Most guides appear to simply be milking the constant flow of tourists to these areas to support their habit of living in paradise. Furhana is a true enthusiast who will share her incredible knowledge and... More

Our trip to Ulva Island was very well organized and our guide ensured that she knew what the small group most wanted to see. All areas of interest were catered for and the birds people wanted to see were sought out. Rare birds like yellow heads and riflemen were seen largely because our guide knew their calls and where they... More

Furhana, the owner of Ruggedy Range, led four of us for four hours and her knowledge of birds and flora is truly encyclopedic. She even had us wait in one spot for ten minutes because she could hear certain species coming our way and they appeared as promised. She was charming and her quick wit added to the pleasurable experience.... More
