Created from the massive 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera, Waimangu today offers a choice of easy walks through volcanic craters, advanced hikes and the Lake Rotomahana boat cruise. Depending on how much time you have to wander through our valley, activities range in duration from 45 minutes to over 4 hours. Outdoor activity, peaceful New Zealand bush, unique ecology, rare and unusual botany and stunning geothermal features - discerning travellers agree that Waimangu is the ‘must do’ Rotorua experience that you can’t go past. « less

What an amazing place. Very beautiful, misty, prehistoric. The walk was achievable in the time we had. Didn't make it to the lake but got to bus stop before that and just had time to go to the toilet... My ten year old son enjoyed the walk, read some of the signs and was suitably disgusted at adult travellers climbing... More

I enjoyed Waimangu, the walk isnt at all difficult and it has a feel of hiking through a national park with some amazing thermal activity to watch. A really good day out. More

The cruise is great as ong as you have fine weather. The steaming cliffs and mini guysers are good too. Decent cafe and gift shop has quality stuff. More

we were blown away by this amazing location! it is like stepping back in time to, as the motto says, 'where life began'. beyond the simply mind blowing natural features, the information provided on the self-guided tour sheet was both informative and fascinating (no easy balance to achieve). staff that we encountered were enthusiastic to share their knowledge and expertise.... I visited Wai-o-tapu and Waimangu in one day. Two very different experiences. Very nice place with things that you wont see anywhere else. More

Amazing, unique and gorgeous. Go at your own pace and soak it in. Make sure you take the extra time and effort to climb to Mt. Haszard to see the blue lake. It is out of this world. At the end of the walk which takes about 3 hours with the detour and tons of pictures you can get a... More

We went here on a whim - luckily it was a great day - warm and bright. We were totally amazed and could easily have spent a day there (take a picnic and make it a complete day trip). The cost for the family (2 adults and 7year old)was about $80NZ which seems high - but they have really set... More

Having looked at the very helpful brochure guide, we decided to walk down the hill and then got the bus back; we didn't do the boat trip. The different geothermal features along the way are fascinating and almost mesmeric at times. We spent a good three hours here and enjoyed it tremendously - took lots of photos and videos. The... Good commentary on the boat trip around Lake Rotomahana, lots of bus or walking options to access the lakes and plenty of little geysers and coloured pools along the track. Well organised and signposted and, dare I say it, better than Whakarewarewa, but I lived in Rotorua for some years as a child and probably take most of the overpriced... More
