Williamstown is a quirky seaside suburb of Melbourne that I get great delight in visiting. There is plenty of boutique shops and restaurants you can either catch a ferry to South Bank or do a short cruise on the bay. A very pleasant way of spending a day.
Ferry from Federation Square river-side, 1 hour ride and reasonable at $21 return per person. Toilet was on board, with free tea and coffee also available. Our 'captain' offered comprehensive and at times humorous commentary about the changes along the river and bay. Fantastic city-scape views from the water. Williamstown has a great range of places to eat. The Tourist...

It is close to the water's edge, which makes it pretty. Good range of places to eat or have takeaway. Not too busy. Garden is pretty for a picnic. Has an historic ambience.
Took the little boat to Williamstown which took an hour. You can sit in or outside the boat. It looks old but it gets you there. Williamstown has a beautiful street front of shops and cafes. Went to Cafe Cirino for a nicely toasted croissant and escargot (pastry rolled like a snail with sultanas) and delicious coffee. You expect the pastries...

Any town that welcomes the Sea Shepherd is a great town to me!!! I love going out and seeing all the ships.
A trip to Williams Town gives you an insight into the fact that Melbourne is made up of a number of small towns or villages and it feels like you have gone out of the city in just 30 mins. Get there by ferry (it can be cold on the water even in summer so take something warm) or cycle,...

Williamtown easily accessbile by train - about 20mins ride from Southern Cross station.
Recommendation for a day trip
1) Ferry around the port - 30 mins ride and cost only $5/- ppx. I have a great time as the weather is great.. blue sky and blue sea with city skytline on the horizon. You shall sea a aircraft carrier docking...
