- GreyoBaku, Azerbaijan253 contributionsMy No 1 thing to do in Sydney!I loved this plaice! In fact when people asked me what the best thing about Sydney was, I always said the fish market that’s how good I found it. The fish was excellent, all fresh and a huge selection with abalone, crabs, prawns etc. held in big tanks. The various kitchens all cooking exactly what you wanted whether on the grill or in butter just meant that you were hungry as soon as you walked in. Ok, price wise it wasn’t the cheapest but places like this are a treasure and should be visited and enjoyed.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 March 2023

The place has a real buzz and the food is extremely fresh . Fantastic Oysters , sashimi etc etc. Buy exactly what you want plus superb selection of wines. A def place to visit when in Sydney.Visited March 2023Written 25 March 2023
- ppppyyyHong Kong, China34 contributionsWorth for a tryWe went there for lunch on Saturday. There were so many people. We still managed to walk around and ordered foods. We had Sydney rock and pacific oysters, lobster, scallops and so. It tastes good but don’t expect comfy eating. However, eating there has its own moment and it’s not very cheap.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 April 2023
- stevebintleyBedford, United Kingdom7,051 contributionsFun morning outGreat place for a morning out, whether you’re actually wanting to buy any seafood or not! There’s more than just fish here, with the butchers and everything else from cheese, fruit and veg, all in lively environments and perfect for admiring. There’s a huge variety of items from the weird and wonderful to regular and the helpful staff are always on hand if you need them. A great outing in the city centre!Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 April 2023
- Tessa HPort Hedland, Australia44 contributionsExperience a true fish market!Great small fish market that is easy to find if you are travelling in Sydney. My partner and I got there early and enjoyed some delicious food. My only comment is that there is little seating places for those who wish to try foods within the market itself. The range of different shops was good and it’s a place I would like to visit each time I travel to Sydney.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 April 2023
- CJayTemecula, California179 contributionsGive it a Try.A great little spot to buy some fresh seafood or if you want to have some fresh Sashimi. It's a one-stop shop for takeout, dining or even having a beer. It does get a bit crowded. Ample parking and easy access. Due to the crowd, you do fine looking for a place to sit. Great place to visit if you come down to Sydney.Visited December 2022Written 7 April 2023
- EdNevisSingapore59 contributionsBoathouse here we come againA trip to Sydney is incomplete without a good meal at Boatshed, Sydney Fish Market. Ken, our favorite chef was on duty that day and took over preparing the dished for us. We (6 of us) started off with a large lobster, the flesh sashimi style and the rest stirred fried with noodles, the Ken style. We also had a good dose of fresh prawns and bbq squid. We washed it down with 3 bottles of Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. What a perfect combo!Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 June 2023
- JMSAdelaide, Australia5 contributionsUndergoing RedevelopmentI wish tourists would take heed of the signs warning not to feed the birds instead of "baiting" them for a photo opportunity! A few people around us lost their fish before they even got to taste them. Not sure about the new redevelopment as prefer the old market charm that seems to be disappearing.Visited August 2023Written 7 August 2023
- Peter A. KnippSingapore, Singapore127 contributionsAmazing fresh seafood! A must go toThe Sydney Fishmarket Adventure! When fresher than fresh is on the table, the Sydney Fishmarket it is! There is indeed Heaven on planet Earth! Invited by @johnsusman and accompanied by @melnathan this was a Monday we’ll spend! Thank you John for this most enjoyable Brunch date! Wouldn’t want to have missed it for anything, and enjoying together with Mel, just magic! As everyone knows, markets are our thing, and if it’s next to the sea where you are guaranteed the freshest of seafood it is simply sensational! It’s not our first visit, we came here 4/5 years ago, but today was special as John is an expert for many a years, and also co-author of a stunning and educational book on Australian Seafood! What seemed amazing though that the market hall appears to be run by mainly the Asian ethnicity, loads of Chinese & Taiwanese, but also a healthy mix of other ethnic groups! The clientele on first look appears to be also around (my guess) about 75-80% Asian. One would had never thought to be in Australia, on the other hand it shows a strong integration of that ethnic group, which was evident when I spoke to some young chinese folks they would exclaim quite proudly to be Aussies, whereby some of the older folks would refer to their country of origin! On the product side. The vast array of seafood was just mind boggling, heaven for any Seafood oriented folks, Can only highly recommend! - Travelove5811,338 contributionsAmazing range of fresh seafood, and great cooked ones too.Lots & lots of amazing huge range of fresh seafood on sale. An eye watering experience, seeing many types of seafood ( sea creatures) which one don't usually see anywhere else. The main building is quite small & houses mostly restaurants & few shops. Outside are more standalone shops. As expected, hordes of tourist here, enjoying the great cooked seafood at restaurants, after browsing the raw ones in shops. Definitely worth a visit to this famous place.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 August 2023

We did the early morning tour, which was outstanding. So worth getting up at 6am. A real experience to see all the fish and seafood being auctioned live everyday. Definitely highly suggest to see where your local fish and chip shop fish actually comes from. Biggest takeaway, buy local.

Not at all impressed with the size or quality of the market from a tourists perspective. and it all shuts down by 4 pm. There are so many other great things you can do with your time in Sydney - this is not one of them.

We were the first to tour on the 10am walking tour with Mandy! Luckily, because of a good catch day, we saw the tail end of the auction action as well! It was a super informative and educational tour with so many close up discussions of the different sea life, natural species, and fishing practices in Australia. It definitely changed the way I buy fish. Loved this tour! Mandy was awesome and made the tour super special!

Came here to see the fish market as you do. Definitely worth a visit just to see the incredible selection of fish and the hustle and bustle. Loads of nice eateries so we got some absolutely amazing sushi! Sat outside to eat which isn’t posh. Lots of seagulls and bird poo as you would probably expect. Not helped by stupid tourists feeding them constantly. But still really enjoyed it.

An amazing array of seafood on display with some amazing prices to match for the high end crab/crays. Very busy place and service took a while, and difficult to find a table and seating to eat, although rear of building is under new construction so should fix this down the track.

Only a brief walk from one of the Sydney Hop On/Hop Off bus stops. We had a wonderful lunch of steamed lobster and salmon brinis. Enjoyed walking through markets and seeing so many different kinds of seafood.

We went here on a Friday morning during summer/ school holidays. It is busy. !!! Great place to see all the delicious seafood Sydney is famous for. Lots of options to buy food to eat there or take away. Seating outside is busy but turns over so wait. Expect to share tables with others and ask to join a table if there is space. You can buy cold wine / beer to enjoy with your meal. Lunch times gets super busy. I suggest having one of your party secure a table while the rest get food. A new market is being built adjacent to the current one.

While we were in Sydney, my husband discovered this market after reading some online reviews and declared that we were going to have lunch there the next day. I knew nothing about this market so I had no expectations. When we arrived at this market, I was completely surprised by what we found. I could not have imagined a more vibrant and bustling market than what we saw. There were 2 buildings - one that housed vendors who only sold fresh seafood and the other larger building had about 20 different vendors selling mostly fresh seafood and you could either purchase raw seafood to take home or just order a meal from their restaurant style menus. There were first come, first serve dining tables and chairs scattered throughout the premises where you can sit down and enjoy your order immediately. We were at the market during lunch time and apparently, that week was a winter break when many Australians were on holiday so there was a large crowd of people at the market.
As many other reviewers stated, the prices are slightly on the higher side so make sure to tour around to each vendor and comparison shop before making any purchases. This market was definitely worth a visit just for the experience.

You can catch a light rail to the fish market. The best option for you is to download Opal app on your phone and check your best options

What would be the best time to go to the Fish Market? Will the eateries be open in the morning or only for lunch? Where can I get the best oysters?

I go the fish markets at around 8:30 am during the weekdays to avoid the lunch time rush and buy what I need to take home. For those wishing to have lunch, no later than about 11:00 am would be a good time to look around to see what’s on offer, find a seat and then order your meal. Sitting outside, breathing in the fresh salty air, with the harbour with the fishing boats view and a tasty seafood lunch accompanied by a great Australian white wine will be remembered as a heavenly outing for years to come. Bon Appétit.
For those who seek a unique experience why not try the Sydney Fish Market Wholesale Auction which commences at 5:30 am every week day apart from public holidays. Please note, public access to the wholesale auction is via Behind the Scenes Tours only,
Sydney Fish Market Behind the Scenes Tours are held every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 6.40 am - bookings are required to avoid disappointment. Click here for further information on tours or phone +61 9004 1108
The wholesale auctions are an event in itself. The amount of seafood exhibited (second only to Tokyo) is enormous. The Dutch auction is where the retailers bid on the seafood. The seafood is fresh off the boats and the bidding atmosphere is exhilarating. This is a once in a lifetime experience and never to be forgotten.

Exactly which are the best place at the market to go to for oysters and clams? GGgg

Dear GGG.....I don't have a favourite so I will not make a suggestion of the best place 😎 There are plenty of choices in the markets. All are within easy walking distance (50/100 metres) so you can walk from one outlet to another to find what you think is the best and make your choice. Clams are not a big thing in Australia but I am sure you will find something to your preference. The choices are extensive...so take it easy and enjoy.
I am arriving Sydney tomorrow. Just wondering the market opens at 7am does that mean food will also get served at 7am or is it later?

I'm not sure if they serve fresh fish at that time as we went on a Sunday evening early an only the Chinese restaurant was open. But they do have breakfast cafes there.

We're hoping to visit the Fish Market when in Sydney in March 2017. Does anyone know when it will be moving to the new site next door? I guess being a market it will remain open in some form or other until the new market is up and runniing.

Hi Marie T
The renovations to the fish markets was only announced about a month ago, the current market will continue to trade where it is while the new market is being constructed, the work on the new market is probably not happening for a few years yet anyway, it is not the first time they have announced an upgrade, a previous government also had the same plans about 5 years ago and nothing happened, really I would be surprised if anything happened about the new market any time soon.
Hope this is some help.
