Not the best state gallery in Australia but still worth a visit. Traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art downstairs; Don't be seduced by the old galleries to the right - it's mostly hyper-art from the Victorian period. The galleries to the left have a good selection from Australia's best-loved artists. Avoid the turgid tours - use your own judgement.

I’ve always been visiting the Art Gallery as part of school excursions or on outings with family and friends! It's never boring with such a wide collection available to see whether it be oriental art, renaissance, high school works or modern sculpture!

We visited the gallery to view the Archibald Portrait exhibition. Walking through the Botanical Gardens was a lovely prelude to our visit. The gallery is spacious, bright and quite impressive. We went to the gallery mainly because the Archibald prize nominations were on show. The paintings were well displayed in a few rooms. While there we also had a wander around the rest of the gallery which was also well displayed.

The art galley is a great place the spend the mornings, it has the additional advantage of enjoying a morning walk through the botanical gardens at its door steps. The best time to visit is during the Archibald prize to view the offerings of best in Australia art on offer.

Some really great shows come through the gallery, as well they have a great permanent collection of Australian and international art.

We go there every trip and just look at a small part of what is on offer. The main gallery is free, with charges for special exhibitions. They have an ipad app which gives you a good feel for the place.

Went for the Bacon exhibition but enjoyed some of the Australian artwork that I studied many moons ago. A nice walk through the park to get to and a lovely building. They open late on a Wednesday.

Love visiting the Archibald's every year and the gallery certainly does this well. Always enjoy a wander around the free areas and really like being able to sit and just look at paintings and sculptures without feeling hurried.
