This monastery was built by King Joao I as his appreciation and devotion to Virgin Mary of the Victory to commemorate the battle of Aljubarrota where outnumbered portuguese troops under his command defeated the Castilians in 1385.
It is the most fascinating and beautiful example of Gothic and Manueline architecture in Portugal

I had overlooked including this site on our Portugal itinerary, having paid more attention to more famous destinations such as Obidos, Tomar and Sintra. Fortunately, we backtracked out of our way to Lisbon in order to visit both Alcobaca and nearby Batalha after our excellent innkeeper at the Casa d'Obidos urged us not to miss either of them.
