I'd heard about this place from a colleague and really wanted to see it while we were in Arras. We had a rental car but didn't want to deal with parking again, so we walked from the Hotel Mercure--it's about 15 minutes from there (get a local map from the front desk). It's a worthwhile visit. There's a small display... More

This is located just out of the centre and I would recommend you take some time to visit. the way we were guided around the old quarry and how each aspect was connected, not to each other but to the actual WW1 was very moving. The guide did a great job

Good audio tour. Brought the whole thing to life. Well worth making a detour for. Highly recommended.

Disliked having to wait 1.5 hours till French officialdom did a spot safety inspection. Staff were very apologetic.Nothing they could do. Once inside theres a small cinema and museum but the highlight is 70 metres underground accessed via a glass lift which descends through the chalk. A very informative one hour tour underground follows. Its on a board walk though... More

Overall I loved this part of my trip to the Somme and surrounding areas. I don't want to give too much away but it's worth every penny. We turned up and must of been lucky with the tour timings as went in straight away. The tour around the underground tunnels dug by the kiwi's in WW1 is fantastic!

We planned to visit this site in the afternoon after realising it was closed for lunch, we stopped in Arras and waited until 1.30pm, when we arrived at 1.15pm the gentleman in charge said we open at 1.30pm but the next tour is not until 2.30pm. You can wait inside and watch a 5 min video! We had already waited... More

La Carrière Wellington in Arras is a very interesting site : you go 20 meters deep in a old chalk quarry to discover the live of the English soldiers who lived there during WWI. Thanks to the guide and the videos, it is really as if you had been there. Very moving... You should definitely go there!

we visited Le Carriere Wellington last July whilst visiting the war sites around Viny Ridge tracing where my husband's grandfather' had talked about in his diary. We were so impressed with Carriere Wellington and how they had preserved the conditions and history of this place we gave them a copy of his diary. We have now been invited to the... More

Really looking forward to this but having walked through freezing conditions we were unable to enter: the gate was closed, no signs or indication why. On our return we checked the web site again.....eventually found in small text and only in the french section that the place was closed until sometime in March. This is not as per their published...
