Location in city center, exhibs changes and there always something new. Finnish art shown every time still very widely. Good place but if you want modern - go to Kiasma.

We entered and paid 10 Euros each for admission. Board showed four floors of exhibition. Ground floor mainly given over to reception, cafe, shop, and cloakroom. We took lift to top meaning to work our way downwards. After leaving top floor we found the two below devoid of anything. So little for so much. Really a waste of time.

This is an excellent gallery with plenty of wheelchairs if needed. My favourite artist was an artist I had never heard of before Eero Jarnfeldt who presents us with a brilliant montage of 19th century landscape paintings. I wouldn't remember the name but for the striking characters, he peoples his landscape with. A novelist looking for inspiration or a short... More

Big museum focussing on (surprise, surprise) Finnish art, with some of the most famous paintings in Finnish art history held here. To most people outside Finland they probably aren't all that famous so I definitely learned a lot and came home with some new favourites. Light and well-organised and good value for money. You definitely need a good half a... More

The collection of paintings from the Finnish Golden Age (1870-1920) is particularly interesting and beautiful. A good selection of paintings by Axeli Gallen Kallela, Hugo Simberg, Helen Scherfbeck and Albert Edelfeldt's are presented as a good collection of Finnish paintings from this period. They also have a large Edvard Munch painting from his Warnemünde-period (1907). They also have a small,... More

The museum is a small but well run and well laid out national art museum. The national collection is very interesting for its diversity and depth. If you are interested in art and Finland's history, the Ateneum is particularly good. Many of the painters have shown Finland in their time, and bring the hard, but remarkable beauty to canvas. The... More

I first went to Ateneum for the temporary exhibition "52 souls" - http://www.ateneum.fi/en/52-souls - to enter into the finnish art and sensibility through the paint. Very curious to know more, I saw a display of the collection, some paitings also from Eero Järnefelt, and other works. It was really a good introduction and discoveries of Finland. It gave the desire... More

I visit here each time I come to Helsinki. The special exhibits are, in themselves, worth a visit. The permanent collection is diverse (older art, modern, European, etc). It has an outstanding collection of Scandinavian art well worth a special trip. The museum cafe has good food and is nice place to stop for a rest stop.
