You might want to avoid visiting in April/May as you may find yourself stuck amoungst visiting greek school parties! However when they have departed the monastery is very serene and peaceful. Interesting place with a brave and terrifying past - the room of recovered skulls with very visible sword wounds is testamony to this. Dont waste your time in the... More

I am constantly amazed at how friendly and welcoming the Cretans are, given that for 5000 years people have been invading and slaughtering the locals (and each other). But Arkadi is now peaceful, with a beautiful church, and stunning views. If you go visit the ossuary, mind your head on the way out: I left a part of my skull... More

The landscape during the trip to the monastery is wonderful. The monastery is up on the hills 19 km from Rethymno. The architecture of the monastery is wonderful and its history dramatic, if you try to imagine.

After a scenic drive up from Rethymnon, this is an interesting place to visit. Allow 1-2 hours and take a guide book that explains the significance of each building. Several are very important to the history of Crete. Be early to avoid the crowds in peak months. Then drive south in the mountains and forget the beaches for a while.... More

Visiting the monastery will not take long, unless you are fortunate to have time and opportunity to visit with one of the two monks who live there. Buy a bracelet, which the monk will put on your arm. The setting is beautiful and the drive from Rethymno is easy and picturesque.

We found this by chance when looking for something else and we were thrilled by it. The location and the building are stunning.

You learn a lot about the local history. I loved the gardens and the colourful trees. The Monastery is very well preserved and it is worth being visited.
