Will be lovely when its finished, but the building work gets in the way. Give it a miss meantime. Stay in the little streets above it.
The works are being performed to improve safety so cannot complain about them, but it made the walk along here, dusty, noisy and not very pleasant. Hopefully when finished it will improve the area ...
We have walked from the cruise terminal into town via Avenia do Mar. It is very beautiful and great for people watching. Wonderful views of the marina and the docked cruise ships.
I'll be honest this isn't the best area to walk in Funchal, even if the regeneration works weren't taking place I'm not sure I wouldn't rather be a street or two further inland where the trees over hang the streets and the traffic isn't nearly as bad. Avenida Arriaga for example has got to blow this out of the water.... More
Excellent location for 'people' watching and street cafe culture. Watch the Taxi drivers saving fuel by 'pushing' their vehicles into taxi rank position along the roadside??
Best avoided for the time being due to the huge regeneration works taking place. But dont let it put you off going to `madeira - there is so much more to see and do - honest.

..... But for now this construction site is a means to an end! There are some good plans for improving the area which I am sure will be of benefit one day - just not today!
During our first visit to Madeira the Avenido do Mar was partly under construction. Due to the flooding of the last years they had to do something on the canal which is ending into the sea.
