The colours of the main lake are amazing, there is a boardwalk part-way round and interesting interpretative boards about the geology of the area, explaining why the area was so attractive for miners from the Romans right through to 1966 when the mines finally closed.

Close to Mertola and a few km of the Spanish border this little village was raised and became famous because of mine digging explorations (Iron, gold and silver). If you want to visit the Alentejo area you have to take road 225 south from Beja. it is how Alentejo is and is used to be! You do have to stop the car, turn of the engine and get out of the car. Listen to the sounds and smell the air!. It is sweet, spice and... I just cannot...
