This is the old fortress or castle in Antwerp and is interesting for that above all else. At the foot of the Steen is the status of Lange Wapper, a local folk tale and legend.

This used to be an interesting museum, but was closed down many years ago. It's one of the oldest buildings in the city, but seriously neglected by the city council.
There was a small cafe with a kids science project display and as far as we could see, there was nothing else here. Beautiful building, and you could look around the outside. Worth a visit for 15-20 mins (or longer for a coffee) and for free.
We happened on this by getting off the tourist hop-on/hop-off bus. The castle is now used as a educational museum on the management and use of water, aimed at school children upto age 9 (that's our point of view, not an official one). But it's quite cute and was serving coffee and other drinks mid-morning.
"Het Steen Der Wijzen" recently opened in the great building of our Antwerp castle "Het Steen". It turned into an exhibition hall, where you can teach your kids about water. Very nice done and very interesting. Furthermore they have a great bar attached to it, with a view on the ocean and nicely decorated. Check it out!

This I did not mind, particularly when we stumbled upon the outdoor pub and mini festival playing rockabilly music on the Sunday that we visited, in the cooling shadow of Het Steen. By the river, this...
