The most recent exhibition based on the portraits of Frans Hals and his contemporaries was exceptionally well presented. The museum itself is at all times worth a visit. It is a beautiful building with a great sense of character and history.

I like the size of this museum. Within an hour you could have see most of it, but if you have the time you can easily spend 3 to 4 fours.

We didn't plan to visit Frans Hals Museum during our short 4 days visit to Amsterdam, water towns and Haarlem as Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum are already on our must visit list. Fortunately, we managed to put aside a morning to visit less famous museum. The total experience is much better than Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. The museum is located... More

This museum is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in a building that formerly was an almshouse. Frans Hals' art is a refreshing change if you've been viewing hours of dark medieval religious art. He painted everyday people with their warts and failings. His brush strokes and style were a precursor to the Impressionists. His infectious "Laughing Boy" picture is... More

We didn't really know that much about Franz Hals before this visit - only that he painted The Laughing Cavalier. That has been well and truly remedied, and I now view him as a special kind of artist. He painted at very high speed, often using the wet-on-wet technique, with no room for error, yet the results are stunning to... More

It was really, really interesting much to my surprise. I am not deeply into art but this was very interesting, well presented and well worth the time spent visiting.

This year 2013 the historic museum, with a fine collection of Frans Hals paintings, is celebrating its 100th year. Please do not miss the opportunity to see Frans Hals paintings completed with paintings from other famous painters of his time.
