We very much enjoyed the Fun Feminism exhibition with its expansive display of works by women in the contemporary world.

Fun and satire in addition of course to the serious messages regarding art by women, were thought provoking and engaging.

Liked the piece titled We Sell White Bread with listed ingredients of White Men, Artificial Flavourings, Preservatives.

And other like-minded offerings.

Richard Serra's contemporary video media was quite difficult for me to grasp, however the museum has a fabulous rooftop terrace with spectacular city & river views.

A superb gallery of permanent and temporary exhibitions of cutting edge contemporary art of very high quality. Video art is something which often leaves us baffled but here the quality of the work had a profound impact on us as did the other challenging works.

This Art Gallery for Contemporary Art is located on the banks of the Rhein and is well worth the walk as it is in a very pretty location with City Walls, City Gates and Paper Mill Museum close by to also visit. In season you can also get a boat across the Rhein to the Tinguely Museum on the opposite bank which is a must see for art lovers. The building is modern and is inconspicuously set back off the riverside walkway. It can be missed but there is a small sign along the walkway.

Unlike elsewhere in Basel, Photography is not permitted. A shame.

Please ignore the ignorant comments by people who's appreciation of art probably stops if it's not a painted horse.
The collection is magnificent and the focus constantly changes. It's always worth a visit. Also there is a small and lovely bookshop opposite of the entrance

Still being constructed so some floors/areas closed but compact temporary exhibition of key works. Great space - spanning one of the mill streams. 10 min walk up hill to tram stop but riverside walk alongside.

The Kunstmuseum is currently closed and some of their artworks have been relocated to the Gegenwartskunst including an excellent self portrait by Van Gogh which I think is the jewel of the collection. The permanent artworks weren't to my taste. The museum is a little off the beaten track which is a about a 10 minute walk from the Kunstmuseum as there is no direct tram passing close to this museum. It does have free entry.

The museum building itself is superb - large galleries, and with excellent lighting. However, with the exception of a floor devoted to interesting art works from the currently closed Kunstmuseum, there is little to warrant a visit. The permanent collections are mostly an insult to ones intelligence - grainy black and white videos showing 'artists' working, reciting boring poetry(?), and, for an example, a huge space with a pile of trousers amidst metal sticks and poles - a 'work' by Joseph Beuys. The latter is an utter load of nonsense. These kind of 'artists' are without any talent in my opinion - I would not even call them 'artists' - con-men more like. Do visitors get pleasure from looking at such things? I certainly don't. The only saving grace is that the museum currently allows free access. The temporary display of works from the Kunstmuseum (Cezanne to Richter) is worth seeing, but forget the rest.

This is a nice museum, located in a modern building, in a lovely part of Basel. We came there especially to see some of the best bits of the closed Kunstmuseum (due to renovation) but also enjoyed all their other pieces. A great place to visit! This summer you do not have to pay admission, due to a gift by a rich donor.

A relatively small, concrete-style museum of several floors dedicated to contemporary art, this building is located somewhat out of the center of Old Town and down by the Rhein River. At the time we went, the museum was in part standing-in for Basel’s principal venue, which is the Kunstmuseum currently undergoing extensive renovations and expansion.

So, the Gegenwartskunst was showing both contemporary art and also an uncharacteristic exhibit entitled “Masterpieces from the Kunstmuseum Basel.” Works from such artists as Degas, Cezanne, Marc, Modersohn-Becker, Pissaro, Van Gogh, and so forth were on show. Yet, we also saw a number of Frank Stella’s works being unpacked and getting ready to be hung.

Since I doubt that this museum has its own collection (without drawing on the Kunstmuseum collection as it was in the exhibit we saw), it would be important to check ahead of time as to which artist(s) it is showing, so you can be sure it’s a subject in which you are interested. As for my rating, it's hard for me to give more than an average rating to a museum without a collection UNLESS I have seen a number of shows there which has resulted in my having a high regard for their curating. Thus, beware that my rating may be too low for what shows are regularly presented.

With the Kunstmuseum being closed for renovations, we resorted to visiting the temporary exhibit which was open here for free to the public. The selected works from Cesanne to Richter felt well thought through, and the presentation was perfect for one hour viewing. It was an appetizer for the beauties one could see at the Konstmuseum once it will reopen. Bonus points - it is manageable even with children.
