The "Mura" or Lucca wall is a green ring around the city 2.5 miles in length. You can use the Mura for a relaxing walk or run. Or you can use the Mura to explore parts of the city. Just walk around and drop down from the wall at any point ... you can never get lost!

Easily accessible by train from Pisa - it was less than an hours ride - and spent a very pleasant few hours walking around the walled town.

My family is from the mountains that you will see when your on the "Murra". We are from Garfagnana. A small town called Vagli di Sopra. I have aunts and a sister that live in Lucca, so, over the years I have done the "passeggiata delle murra", or, "stroll on the walls" often. Most times the walls are used as... More

The (very thick) walls around the old part of Lucca can be easily walked in less than an hour, or you can stroll up and down the ramparts and drop into various parts of the city that take your fancy. All of Lucca life can be seen up here. If you don't want to walk you can hire a bike... More

These are the early 17th century walls, which is why they are so nice to walk or cycle around. Wide enough for a proper road and with the forts and gates supporting gardens they are a fantastic way to spend time understanding the layout and environs of the city, or just to have a picnic or chill out.

The mura/city wall is a great place to walk or bike around the entire old city center. You can take a ramp down to the center if you see something that appeals and then walk back up to the wall. The views are fantastic and the pace is whatever you want. During our walk there was a Mercedes Classic Car... More

From all the photos, I didn't realise that you can actually walk/cycle/run on the top of the wall. The wall is very wide allowing one to enjoy the city of Lucca from above. My husband and I rented bikes for 2 euro for an hour at the info centre near the Western Gate. The people at the info centre (who... More

One of my very favorite places to be. At the moment the walls are in full sun as the leaves are not yet fully out; yet the surrounding mountains are still snow capped. The town planners from years ago should be congratulated for preserving the walls and the space between the centro storico and the new town outside. The park... More

Lucca has a city wall that is absolutely incomparable. I originally thought of a city wall as narrow, steep and made entirely of stone, but in Lucca, the wall is enormous. The center is filled with dirt to withstand cannon balls, and the top is wide and flat, perfect for walking, jogging or bicycling. It rings the ancient historical center... More
