Neighbourhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

- Carolynrose56 contributionsWorth seeingThis museum displays artwork and plans from the Duomo. The museum is located on the far side of the Duomo but the ticket office is located in a different location, behind the Duomo, near the Via Calzaiuoli. I recommend buying advance tickets. When I visited, there was a long line to buy tickets. This museum has several floors, very well displayed, and the descriptions of the art is posted in English and Italian. I was very impressed with this museum. Some of the art/plans were original and some were copies. Don't miss going to the top floor, not just for the restroom, but for up close views of the Duomo Cathedral. Lastly, my scan code on my tablet didn't work. The staff was so accomodating and contacted their office to re-send another scan code. Great customer service. Thank you.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 April 2023
- Kenneth EErwin, Tennessee519 contributionsThe real gates of paradise are hereKept seeing people outside Baptistry taking pics of the replica gates of paradise. Get tickets to the museum and go see the real ones. 3 floors to see. Well worth a visit. The employees seem to watch people like crazy. Almost to the point of staring. Was a little weird but may be needed.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 May 2023

We went here primarily to see the original Gates of Paradise by Ghiberti but ended up spending a couple of hours taking in everything else here. Many original works from the Duomo and Baptistery are here now . Also fascinating to see the architectural models of the DuomoVisited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- GoingGuideNottingham, United Kingdom1,213 contributionsA must do while in FlorenceFabulous place to explore to find out about how Il Duomo came to be such an amazing cathedral. It takes you through a fascinating story of how the design changed through the centuries and how each separate design was achieved in its construction. The museum has kept the original parts, such as carvings, statues and pieces of artwork, of the designs that were changed. Many other artefacts, such as priests' vestments and silverware, are also kept, plus the smazing doors that used to be part of the cathedral. Overall, this impressive display can take a good few hours to look through in order to take in the amazing awe and wonder it portrays. Well worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023

I think this was my favorite place in Florence. The number of great pieces was simply outstanding. It has several pieces by Donatello, including a wooden sculpture of Mary Magdalene.

The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is part of the monumental complex of Santa Maria del Fiore, which also includes the cathedral, bell tower and baptistery, and purchase of any of the monuments passes will also allow access to the museum. Translated in English as Museum of the Works of the Cathedral, the museum is literally just that - a museum containing many of the original works of art created for the Florence Cathedral, Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. Most of the original sculptures by great Renaissance masters such as Michelangelo, Donatello and Ghiberti have been removed from these buildings (replaced by replica pieces) and transferred to the museum. With more than 750 works of art spanning 7 centuries being preserved in 6000 sq metres of space structured in 28 rooms over 3 floors of the museum, you would need at least half a day to pore through the entire exhibits, starting at the splendid Hall of Paradise. If time is short, then proceed straight to the highlights of the museum, ie. "Gates of Paradise” by Ghiberti, “The Pieta" by Michelangelo, and Donatello's wood "Penitent Magdalene". With such a fine collection of art, sculptures and artifacts, it is no wonder that this museum is often touted as one of the most important museums in the world, both for the number of important artworks housed inside as well as its outstanding value to humanity in epitomising the spirit of Florence as the cradle of Renaissance.

Previous review was somehow removed, presumably as they disliked the one star. Had a horrible experience here. The museum is fine but the security staff at the front entrance physically assaulted my one year old child when he got stuck in the turnstiles and then screamed at us at the top of his lungs. Honestly they are lucky we did not get the police involved. Couldn't reccommend this place to a soul.

I went here at the end of 8 busy days in Florence, so feel I was a little 'arted out' to do it justice. I am definitely going back again! I had been before quite some years ago and from memory it was rather dark. The jewel in its crown (in my view) - a Michelangelo Pieta - was in those days in a rather dim room with other works and not really lit, so you could almost miss it. Fast forward to 2023 and this is now in a space on its own, beautifully lit and with a bench in front of it so that you can sit and wonder at it. This is a small example of how lovely the museum is now and how beautifully and thoughtfully refurbished it is. It has amazing art works -the original doors to the baptistry by Ghiberti, Donatello's 'Penitent Magdalene' and so much more - as well as statues and other works from the Duomo/Cathedral itself - all, to my mind, beautifully cleaned and restored. One floor has a huge model of the Cathedral, with a bench above on a mezzanine level, from which you can look down on it and there is a 3rd floor terrace with a fab view of the actual Dome of the Cathedral. The whole thing was a visual wonder and I will return to do it justice asap. It also had a good shop/bookshop, and a cafe (which I didn't try). Sadly, the cafe didn't seem to have external seating on the piazza of the Cathedral.

This is an engaging museum with a lot of interesting artefacts. I did not book in advance and it was easy to get a ticket. I also recommend going early, it wasn’t too busy when I arrived but was really filling up by the time I left

This is a very good museum, full of amazing artifacts, artwork, and historical information. It is well organized and presented, and never feels crowded. There are lots of information signs and short videos to give you the background that you need to appreciate the displays.
There is an entry fee which you can pay onsite or buy ahead of time online. We bought online as part of a package for entry into other places like the bell tower and baptistery.

1,5/2 ore direi, come media.
Come in ogni museo dipende da quanto ci si sofferma sui capolavori.
Anche 15 min di relax sulla terrazza, osservando la cupola di S. Maria del Fiore a due passi.
