Lovers of Renaissance architecture love the Basilica - how could you not? The outer shell was designed by Palladio, the famous Renaissance architect. The interior is the original trading center of Vicenza. History is right before your eyes.

One of the first places I visited when arriving to Vicenza. I knew nothing about the historical significance when I first saw it, but was immediately impressed. I also met my wife in front of it, so this place has a special place in my heart.
We had just come from weeks in Rome and Florence and had no idea what to expect. This was a serene and elegant offset to the many baroque Romanesque and rococo buildings of the previous citys.
We truly enjoyed walking around this main square and visiting the museum inside. We rented an English translated tour device which made the tour even better! Was able to see one of the largest art exhibitions in Italy December 2012:'Raffaello verso Picasso. Truly amazing to experience more than one hundred masterpieces from around the world in a unique exhibition!!!
This is just a nice little walk around a mammoth and historic basilica overlooking the main square. They have special exhibits on the top floor throughout the year. Worth checking out- the entrance to the basilica is free, exhibits require a small fee.
Like the Teatro Olimpico, the Basilica isn't as grand and opulent as many sites in Italy, but it has a ... (hard to explain) ... comfortable beauty. Like all of Vicenza - it's right sized and accessible. It's amazing historic art that you instantly feel at home with.

The facility has been completely redone and is just a fantastic venue for art exhibitions. We accidentally stumbled upon the current exhibition on its opening day. No problem getting a ticket and one of the finest exhibitions we have seen in Italy. It compares favorably with what you would see at the Scuderie in Rome or the Palazzo Strozzi in...

We were fortunate to be in Vicenza for the very special Rafael to Picasso art show at the Basillica. For an extra fee, well worth it, you can see a very special collection of pictures, many on loan from art museums around the world. The Boston Fine Arts museum sent a wonderful selection, as did Hartford, Detroit and many others....
