Named after the patron saint of Milan, it was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo (1564–1631). The library's collection is rich in classical manuscripts, notably Homer and Vergil, in incunabula, and in Oriental texts. It also contains Leonardo da Vinci's profusely illustrated Codex Atlanticus, now exhibited for the first time at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana and at the monunmental Sacristy by Bramante in Santa Maria delle Grazie. « less

easily found as moments from the main cathedral square but in a quite side square No where near as busy as other parts of the cities attractions it was an absorbing and interesting visit highlighted by the da Vinci codex . To be able to get up close and absorb them without buffeting crowds was wonderful The building itself is... More

An impressive collection of paintings and Leonardo da Vinci's sketches (at the end of the tour, in the library). Too bad a few of the most important ones were sent to an exhibition in Tokyo when we were there... Make sure you stay patiently for a few minutes to see the movie describing the creation of the large Fresco with... More

We went to see the painting museum and it was not what we expected. There are a lot of great paintings, but an unusual amount of Brueghels (Belgian painter) and only one Carravaggio, but its a great one. What really made the visit was the exhibit of Da Vinci drawings in the library. They were truly amazing and worth seeing.

The Pinacoteca is worthy in its own right - the Da Vinci writings are just an add on. Some great works including Botticelli, Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio made all the more interesting by the intriguing building they are housed in. The down side is that you are dumped at the back of the building at the end and need to... More

In torrential rain last Sunday, we attempted to find the Ambrosiana - not easy! Tucked in back streets with no signage, we eventually found ourselves at the back door. Fortunately, an Italian lady who spoke English, directed us to the front which was some way away and surrounded by roadworks. At the pay desk I left my umbrella and my... More

I only went because I got a joint ticket from Santa Maria delle Grazie to see lots of Da Vinci pieces. However, I am glad I did because the paintings I saw were brilliant. The scraps of paper that Da Vinci wrote on show how advanced he was for the times (great), and I got to see people working on... More

The decision to visit was taken solely on the the flyer Codex Atlanticus - The World's Largest Collection of Works of Leonardo Da Vinci and this proved to be a mistake. Being of a scientific and engineering background, the opportunity to see the great man's work seemed to be an unmissable event. Imagine then the disappointment of having arrived there... More

Dear Visitor, we are sorry to know that your visit of the Codex Atlanticus exhibition and of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana was disappointing and we would like to answer to some points of your review. The sentence on the flyer “The World's Largest Collection of Works of Leonardo Da Vinci” refers to the Codex Atlanticus, which is composed of 1119 sheets... More

The Ambrosiana seems to sell itself mainly on the basis of the 'Atlantic Codex' exhibition - selected pages from Leonardo da Vinci's notebook. This is fairly interesting, although you would need to make a very detailed study to get much out of it. Much better is the brilliant art gallery, particularly the main Borromeo Collection. It is beautifully arranged and... More

I went for the Da Vinci things, but all the other things they had there meant I spent a couple of hours happily browsing the other works, before I every made it to D.V at the end! A definite Must See. I could wish the Da Vinci pages weren't quite so low down (displayed at an optimal height for children,... More
