Easy side trip, low crowd, amazing Michelangelo's Moses. Worth a quick visit....not sold on the chains of St. Peter, but fun to see. Location up a hill a bit but easy enough to find using a map.

As I have read about the tomb of pope Julius and Michelangelo's saga regarding it, I was thrilled to actually see this monument. Moses is a masterpiece and the other less famous statues, that surround it, complete a grand set, fit for any tombstone. The church is not crowded and you get plenty of time to appreciate the beautiful art.
We visited in November, 2011. The church is a ten minute walk from the Coliseum (perhaps less, but it's a bit uphill, so I'll assume you'll amble as we did). They are pleasant, quiet streets. The church itself is nothing special on the outside...you can practically miss that its a church. The inside is small and while it isn't stunning,...

We had this on our list of sights to visit but found it difficult to find on our first attempt! Persevered and went back the next day - we had walked passed it the first time as the church looks as if it is part of another official looking building. Glad we found it - the sculpture of Moses is...

Out of all strange things, this light up Moses took the cake. I would have not thought I would see such a thing Church was very interesting and there were some statues and pictures that were great, but Light Up Moses ??? Really ?
This was one of the last church's we visited. You will enjoy the peace of the church be prepared for the walk up the steps if you go on the metro. It's apiece of history to see the chain that held Peter enjoy seeing it in its casket.
Not a great believer in relics, but happy to go along just to see. Also, Michelangelo's Moses is here, which is a bonus. If you are in the area or can make a short diversion, go see it. The church itself is pretty nondescript, but worth it just to wonder....could they be the real chains?
It's a little tricky to get there but once in you have to admmire Michel Angelo's work of art and the chains that once tied up Saint Peter.
Don't leave Rome without seeing Michelangelo's Moses. It is a marvel. I was surprised to find the church very crowded at 15:00. My previous visits have been in the morning and there were very few visitors. Most people went first to Moses and then to the chains of St.Peter, so doing it in reverse order worked best for us.
Church itself is unprepossessing, especially from the outside. And it's a steep, long climb to get to it. If you're not devout, go only to see Michelangelo's Moses. If you're a fan of sculpture, it's easily worth the effort.
