Interesting that it's called Altstadt, as it really was just a lot of bars. That's what it's known for, so I wasn't really expecting much more, but thought perhaps there would be something else. spent about 2 hours and that is plenty.

When we were there in the spring of 2012, there were some protesters in the square, others eating ice cream and lots of shoppers. There are Korean restaurants and it's a nice place to shop and meet.
On a short stop-over at Dusseldorf make time for a stroll through the Altstadt and along the Rhine. Lots of stops for people watching, shopping Alt Bier and authentic local food. A fun few hours.
To really get the most out of this you need a few days. There are so many pubs and restaurants you get confused with choice. Also a lovely fresh food and fruit market.
A great long walk from the Mediahaven neighborhood to the Aldstadt (old town) and all around this older part of the city along the Rhine, topped off with wienerschnitzel and plenty of the local Altbier. It was the first nice weekend in spring and everyone was out - a great Sunday evening in advance of Monday meetings.

Don't skip this place, it is very nice, easy to find it with nice bars and restaurants; Wonderfull buldings, great atmosphere
Tons of restaurants and bars to choose from along the streets of the Old Town (Altstadt). Fun to walk around the area and see what options you have to eat and drink.
