It is a vast gallery with lots of famous artists from Rembrandt to V.Kandinski. Very enjoyable time spent there and I practicable had the building to myself.

I booked the English audio for the tour of the permanent exhibit. I was very impressed with the quality of paintings and artists there, as well as the way they were presented. This was a very enjoyable afternoon, and I highly recommend it.
Saw the Giacometti exhibition which was showing and took a look at the permanent collection. Some nice pieces but not a huge amount to look at although I was solely there for the contemporary collection housed in a very nice new wing. Original wing houses the more Germanic European pieces which have few nice pieces.
I would like to start speaking about the museum: It is full of very important painting, including "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" and some picasso and Munch painting. However, it is impossible to understand something because english comments are not available close to the painting. The staff is not friendly at all and they do not speak any english.
For a nice couple of hours enjoying art, Hamburg has a nice variety in this beautiful building. The Renoir and Degas are my personal favorites here, but there are also German Impressionists and a wide variety of other collections. Worth the time. Great that they have portable stools you can carry and use around the museum, but bad that one...

German art is seldom outside the country and this exposition gives a ver ynice insight to the romantic period. Gaspar Friedrich is to be savoured and revisited.
We liked to go from room to room and follow the develoment of painted art through the centuries. The several Italian motives from the 19th century were wonderful.
Kunsthalle is a great place to spend half a day. Old and new building are connected by a tunnel and you buy one ticket for all. Changing special exhibitions are very well presented. Thurs. open till 9:00pm. Nice coffee shop in old part.
You can't miss the Kunsthalle in Hamburg's downtown area...and you shouldn't. Check the banners hanging outside
for the current art exhibition. It is well worth your time, especially if you are not interested in doing a lot of shopping or the weather is damp and you forgot your umbrella. I have been pleasantly surprised at the variety of art exhibits...

What a maze - yet, how much is there to discover! For the first time I made to the contemporary collection and regret not having come sooner...
