Almost missed the train into there because we were running late, but they waited a couple minutes for me to run up there after we parked. We laid for a couple hours with later bottles inhaling the salt air, wonderfully relaxing, fell asleep, didn't want to leave the cave. Bought some salt in the store next door.

Since the Eagle's Nest tour had not yet opened up for the season, my brother and I decided to take the Salzberg mine tour. I had visited over 20 years ago, but much has improved since then. Absolutely amazing how the salt is extracted from the rock and prepared for consumption. A great family outing.

Be prepared to go down a couple of very steep slides, or to take the other option of walking down a steep slope and then later stairs in semi darkness. So much of the wealth of the Berchtesgaden and Salzburg area was founded on the "white gold" (salt) industry, that any visit to this area wouldn't be complete without a visit to a Salt Mine.
