The place cinema was born! To be specific where brothers who invented cinema were born. Take a metro from centre de Lyon to see beautiful house of Lumiere Bros and then take a journey through history of cinema. It start with old times when people enjoyed theatre of shadows - ends with motion picture and a real professional camera.

We visited this museum as it was one of the few places open on a public holiday. We are so glad that we made the journey. It is a brilliant museum housed in a lovely art nouveau house. The history of the Lumiere brothers and film making is fascinating, and exhibits are well displayed and interesting. Outside, the wall of... More

There is a metro stop called Institute Lumiere. Small and well presented. It seems that it is in the old residence (Villa) of the Lumiere brothers. Cameras and old cinematographic tools on display. They run some old films at times.

This museum is a short Metro ride from the centre of Lyon. It is house in the old Lumierre mansion which architecturally is interesting in itself. If you are interested in how the Lumierre brothers developed the film making process or interested in film then visit but otherwise it will hold little interest especially if you have kids in tow.... There are two reasons to visit this museum. The first is to see the history of the Lumiere brothers and their contributions to film making, and the second is to see a gorgeous villa built at the beginning of the 1900s in the art nouveau style. I really enjoyed both. The signage for the museum is very good and photography... More

Many movies shot from 1895 (!) by the Lumiere brothers, displayed in the house they grew up in, I liked those best. Also on display, some of the first cameras ever. In addition to one of the comments below: if you don't speak French, hire an audio device so you can hear everything explained in English (or in some other... More

I thought it would be more interesting. I was a bit disappointed with the place. I think they could exhibit more interesting stuff. There are movies about the brothers' life but in French only, no English subtitles.

Nice place with lots of videos and interactive features. We went on a bike rented through this nice public-rent system they have in Lyon, stayed for about an hour and then went back to the city center. I reccomend you to do the same, it's worth the visit.

I was very surprised by the museum which is located in the original Lumiere Mansion. If you're a film making student or a collectioner of old cameras, this is the place to visit. It's amazing how far film making has come
