It looks more like a fortress than a basilica. The inside is very impressive. If you walk on the left side of the church, you will be surprised by the view. At you feet, the entire city of Lyon, and on a clear day, the Alpes.

Another short ...but steep walk from our hotel...again...the flower gardens of roses and another myriad of blooming flowers were superb..most importantly...the location of the Church overlooking all of Lyon was indeed beautiful....
Access to the basilica is by way of a funicular which is really a cable car that takes you right to the church. It is situated on Fourvière hill, overlooking Lyon and has beautiful views of Croix Rousse, the Rhone and Saône rivers and Vieux Lyon. Inside the Basilica, the whole of the interior is richly ornate, with even the...

Intricate mosaics of gold and pastel. Subject matter was not solely religious. Extreme vaulted ceiling. And its free!

This was a truly awe inspiring visit. Mesmerising basilique, never seen one like it yet. And all to the honour Mary. I loved it and would really like to visit again. It really touched me.
I liked the architecture inside and outside. It is magnificient and do not forget to visit the lower level which is missed by many people. The view of the city is great on a sunny day. Unfortunately, the walk up to the top is somewhat of a hike.
Beautiful and unusual architectural design. In particular the mosaics are worth visiting. Easily accessible by taking the funiculaire from the old town; the walk up would be too much even for the fittest.
we drove to the basilica and it was my favorite attraction that we saw in lyon. to the right of the basilica is a souvenir shop and to the left an ice cream parlor with beverages.
