Lyon is a great place to walk and soak in the views and atmosphere.[I have reviewed the old town and the basilca separately.] There is an enormous city square close to the classy cobblestoned shopping precinct. Walk through the parks, along the river and don't miss the wonderful murals painted on some buildings.

We walked miles around Lyon and especially old Lyon. The Cathedral is stunning from outside and inside but the Basilica is absolutely awesome. Just makes you humble to be in such an amazing building even if you aren't at all religious. Not to be missed! Take the funicular up and enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire city old and... More

Perfect to 'get lost' in... Yes there are little touristy trap shops, but it adds to the atmosphere. If you are an aussie, I would liken it to The Rocks markets. Except it has hundreds of years on The Rocks! The cobblestoned streets, the quaint little cafes and bouchons... It is just a beautiful spot in Lyon. Do yourself a... More

Vieux Lyon, was being in a mini Paris. It was a bustling city, with many cafe's, shoppes and people. It's a pretty busy place, with cool parks where you can go and spend time with your significant other or a group of friends. Theres's a huge ferris wheel right in the center which is kind of cool and makes it... More

Vieux Lyon is well worth a visit. It is full of tourists, and has a certain amount of the usual tourist junk (postcard stores, etc.), but somehow it has kept that to a minimum and retained much of its charm. It is full of 15th, 16th and 17th century buildings, narrow streets, traboules, etc. and is really quite lovely. There... More

Vieux Lyon, is a great place to visit on a Sunday, when the majority of the city is closed down. Since Vieux Lyon is a high tourist area, all the shops tend to stay open on Sunday, while many other places in the main district are closed. As a consequence, you will find yourself amidst all the tourists in this... More

Every single city in Europe has its "Old Town" - Stockholm, Prague, Munich etc etc. Likewise, Lyon also has one. It's got windy medieval cobbled streets, cafes, restaurants, bars, outdoor seating, old churches, souvenir shops etc. Unfortunately, Lyon's does not have anything extra to make it stand out from any other old town in Europe. In addition, the amount of... More

Very well preserved historic UNESCO site, with cobbled streets, cutesy shops and restaurants and the fascinating traboules. Well worth a visit to Lyon, just to hang out in this area and sample true Lyonnais food (robust, but tasty - especially the frogs legs in garlic butter and parsley.

The cobbled streets and quaint shops and restaurants. However as in Lyon you are always dodging what the dogs leave behind and the prices are too high to justify even a souvinier. It is supposed to be the food capital but we went into one restaurant and walked out after 15 minutes. All the waiters seem to hate tourists. The... More

Compact. Fascinating. Courtyards, renaissance buildings. Garden terraces. Lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. Stunning cathedral. The old town has it all.
