I am fascinated by the history of the place. Obviously this place was meant to be the next St. Peter's after the schism. I am amazed at the amount of work put into the place, but it is now a former shell of its glory. Good to go once, but I wouldn't pay to see it again.

The self guided audio tour of the Pope's Palace in Avignon, France provided an excellent way to spend a rainy Saturday morning. This period in the history of the Church is fascinating for may reasons and they come alive through this tour. While it does not show all of the splendor of a Versailles, the blank walls allow one's imagination... More

Vast palace, now stripped of its riches but spoke volumes about the power of the Popes, and the Curia.

This is a huge place but the striking feature is how much must have been lost of the decoration since the french popes last lived here. There are small areas where the elaborate decoration still can be seen but much is bare stone. From the roof top there are great views down the Rhone and across it to Chateauneuf. While... More

We took the Avignon Tourism tour called " when the popes lived in Avignon." Our guide knew everything about the palace. Additionally helpful was the hour spent before entering the palace, learning about historical Avignon.

Amazing buildings, we went around 9am to avoid crowds. It was still busy but we did not have to wait. They have a storage area for strollers and allow you to take a baby carrier. We did not get the audio guides. There are display cards in most rooms available in English. If not traveling with a young child I... More

The Palace is gorgeous from the outside, and in being in Avignon, it looks like it came out of a fairy tale... but I was really disappointed but the inside! There is only one small room that was preserved (tiles reconstituted and wall painting and ceiling) but all the rest of the whole palace is empty! No furniture, and no... More

The Palais des Papes is very large, with towering walls, inner courtyards and a high tower which gives an excellent view of the surrounding country, including the Pont d'Avignon. We were there during the Alterarosa festival so there were beautiful roses in the "cloister". We had an Audio guide which really does give a better understanding of the history and... More

While in Avignon you must visit Le Palais des Papes. It was lovely in May and not too crowded yet. The audio guides were helpful and it's a beautiful place to spend the morning wandering.
