We took the Avignon Tourism tour called " when the popes lived in Avignon." Our guide knew everything about the palace. Additionally helpful was the hour spent before entering the palace, learning about historical Avignon.

Amazing buildings, we went around 9am to avoid crowds. It was still busy but we did not have to wait. They have a storage area for strollers and allow you to take a baby carrier. The Palais des Papes is very large, with towering walls, inner courtyards and a high tower which gives an excellent view of the surrounding country, including the Pont d'Avignon. While in Avignon you must visit Le Palais des Papes. It was lovely in May and not too crowded yet. The audio guides were helpful and it's a beautiful place to spend the morning wandering.
