It recently underwent a £35million expansion and refurbishment that transformed the museum into a world-class gallery displaying many of the city’s most important fine and decorative art works. The collection covers more than six centuries of work, but the museum is best known for its 19th century British paintings. « less

I have to admit, I didn't expect to like the art gallery as much as I did. Perhaps it was the temporary Raqib Shaw exhibit that filled the foyer with foliage, the excellent guide on the free tour, the spectacular Victorian plasterwork in the Athaneum theatre or the lovely gluten-free cake at the cafe. But mostly it was the excellent... More

Really good venue. The Lowry and Vallette room was so uplifting for true Mancunians, although I think there may have been a recent change to the layout of the gallery. The tea room and restaurant are definitely worth visiting; nice relaxed atmosphere.

After a disastrous hotel stay we sought sanctuary in the Art Gallery. Beautiful temporary exhibitions from their wonderful collection as well as the great permanent galleries. A great place to escape for an hour or two.

Wonderful piece of calm in a busy city. A must if your a lover of art but also very family friendly with lots of activities. If you need a break a cafe is on the ground floor and raqib shaw was one of the exhibitions on show which was an interesting different take on things. A great selection of french... More

We enjoyed looking at the Lory paintings and also the wonderful impressionists, the interactive exhibits and others in this beautiful building. We though the floral displays outside the gallery were very inspiring.

Love this building. Great place for the whole family to visit. Great choice of paintings and exhibitions. Easily spend the whole day in this art gallery. When you are ready for a break there is a great café to chill out in. Gift shop has lots to choose from. One year we booked a tour for our staff as an... More

Both outside and in the foyer and landing were a pretty selection of plants which is a really nice and unusual touch.A really good selection of art through the ages well hung with information for those that want it.After about an hour and a half I discovered there is a whole new wing with more modern art so I had... Really enjoyed browsing the various masterpieces in this gallery. I'm not a particularly big art fan but truly appreciate art much more than I ever used to, I think it comes with age! So I had a great time slowly wandering about, I liked the Psirens painting the most. I particularly enjoyed the modern art parts of the gallery /... More

The Manchester Art Gallery is well laid out, has changing exhibits and the entry is free! Raqib Shaw's work is inspirational. We found that the longer we looked at a piece the more we saw. There is a video available which includes an interview with the artist, together with a brief demonstration of his method of painting. Other exhibits were... More

Yesterday they had this awesome spring decoration with daffodils in and around the building. I happened to pass by and went into the gallery. It was free. Thoroughly enjoyed looking at the various epochs. Would come here regularly if i lived in Manchester.
