The castle's turbulent history owes much to its proximity to England which brought it into border conflicts.Includes siege warfare exhibition, a children's adventure park, a nature trail and a children's trail. The Castle is connected by footpath to the adjacent National Nature Reserve. Cafe open daily in summer and Sat & Sun in winter. « less

If touch have limited time in the area then make a visit here a priority. Not only is there a lot to explore in the partial ruins, it has not been ruined by commercialisation as can happen to so many tourist attractions. We spent a good half-day here (longer than expected) though the lovely sunny weather helped! The video, telling... More

I wouldn't visit the area just for the castle (luckily there's other things not too far to visit!) but its worth a visit if you're there Along with the 'new castle' (which isn't all that new!), there's also the foundations of the old one, an information center along with video (narrated by Tony Robinson no less!), playground, tea rooms, souvenir... A beautiful castle set in some fantastic grounds. The castle itself is worth a look for the price of admission, but there is also a lovely nature walk and a great play area for children. There is the usual array of gifts in the shop but there are some great books that are worth a look, especially for outdoor types... More

This is well worth a visit if you are in the Dumfries area. We seemed to drive along the country lanes for ages and thought we were never going to get there but once we did we couldn't believe how impressive it looked. We went in the morning and were the first ones there so we had the luxury of... More

We visited several castles in Scotland with our children ages 8 and 10. We all absolutely loved visiting Caerlaverock - we all agreed it was our favorite. It is a bit off the beaten path, but we finally found it with the help of a local teenager. We happened to visit at a very unbusy time, so we had the... More

Looking for a fun day trip from Glasgow? Take the train to Dumfries (about 1-2 hour ride), then a short bus ride to the castle. The castle is bigger than it appears and there's lots of nooks and crannies to explore! They also have a cute little cafe that serves sandwiches, soups, etc and a little gift shop. All the... More

A wonderful castle near the Solway Firth only a few miles south of Dumfries. We didn't know what to expect when we visited, but we found an amazingly scenic ruin, with its three-sides design and water-filled moat. The information panels throughout are very informative and you can wander into and up most of the remains to get a real feel... More

Highly recommend a visit. Great example of a castle as well as lovely walks on the edge of the nearby nature reserve. Extremely friendly staff member on duty on Sunday who was happy to provide advice and recommendations. Tea room also well worth a visit. Dogs allowed everywhere bar the tearoom but there are outside seats available.
