A fascinating absolutely beautiful cathedral, well deserving of its reputation of being the crown jewel of English cathedrals
The view as you walk towards the Cathedral from across the green is breathtaking. Try to approach it from this direction and not from the market square. Walk around it and take a good look at the structure before you go in. Once inside there is one amazing sight after another from the scissor arches made in the 1300's (looking...

We visited on a gorgeous sunny evening which showed the Cathedral to it's very best. The green in front of the Cathedral is well maintained and a lovely place to sit and watch. The Cathedral is impressive enough just to sit outside but you can go in and see the architecture, perhaps catch the choir or service, or visit the...

Intimate, feminine cathedral with warm oolitic limestone (Diukting stone) hue.
The OXO tower supports, mediaeval acro props in effect, built after subsidence threatened to bring the whole place down are, with the West Front of course, Wells' crowning glory.

From the outside it’s just another English medieval cathedral, which is no small thing. But from the inside is perfection of design and scissor archers, something that I did not know did or could exist. I will now spend the rest of my touristic life looking for them. And disappointed every time I walk into another building of grandeur.
A beautiful building serving a living community. Strongly recommend guided tour, at no extra charge, to enrich your visit. Suggested admission of £6.00 is good value. We had the feeling that this ancient building retains its atmosphere and spirituality whilst modern developments and displays enhance the experience. If you visit Wells this is an essential viist.
It is a massive and beautiful cathedral, inside and out. Don't miss the clock. Built in the late 1200's it is outstanding in its beauty.......stained glass, architecture, vaults and quire.
Had intended to visit for this venerable building for some time. History is exuded at every step. Do not expect to rush around - leave time to sit and marvel and reflect. Attend a service and understand the unbroken purpose of this building stretching back in time. The Chapter House - The jousting clock - the Scissor arches - the...

We had planned to go to the Morning Prayer service while in the area. When we arrived, we discovered it was a confirmation service (mainly for choir members it appeared) which was not mentioned on the website. The service was halfway through, but the sermon was good!
We returned later to look round, seeing the magnificent clock, stained glass and...

It is well worth a visit to Wells cathedral if you are visiting Cheddar area .The scissor arches, the astronomical clock and the carvings both inside and outside are amazing. We took a guided tour which lasts about an hour and it gives lot of information which we may not notice otherwise.
