Of the 108 walled towns and cities that once existed in England, less than a third retain as much as a single gateway. York is totally unique in Britain offering as it does examples of Roman, Dark Age, Viking, Medieval and later defences, and on such a massive scale. Following extensive recent research, they are now brought to life with a self-guided audio tour on a personal media player (all equipment supplied) - taking you around the walls at your own pace. « less

An excellent way to see all of the city and take note of places you want to visit later. the only downfall when we went there was some work being carried out on a section of the wall so we couldn't do it all. Oh well we'll just have to go back!!!!

This is my first choice of activity for any visitors to York, because it gives a good overview of the city and allows people to spot where they might like to go next. Walking along the walls gives you a great sense of the history of York, in a completely unpretentious way. Especially enjoyable in good weather.

What a delight! Most historical cities (like Canterbury, Norwich, Nottingham, etc.) will have traces of walls around the city, so if you miss it here (which you couldn't possibly since there are some near the train station) then you can always find them elsewhere. Although some may see it as a mere wall, it is a great reminder of the... More

You have to do at least 2 of the 4 pieces of the citywall nearly surrounding the whole old town. You will have a nice look into the backyards and some of the nice gardens ,also the Minster and other historie buildings can be seen from high up on the walls.Be aware that the walls don't open before 8.00 am... It was a sunny day; we walked 2 of the 3 sections. Particularity enjoyed the section which ran behind the Minster which gives a real flavour of this historic city. You can buy a York Pass from Tourist Information (comes with £5 discount if you buy 2 day pass from the Information Centre). I mention this as you will come... More

A great way to see York and very imaginatively presented, with regular displays of information as you go round. You can get coffee in one of the towers, highly recommended if you can get in!
