This is a relatively small museum but because of the history of Whitby the museum covers such a multitude of subjects and ages from Jurassic to Cook and beyond, well worth the time to visit its the place the locals visit.

The staff were very enthusiastic. However I thought it was a bit expensive for what it was. We had seen posters around the town advertising the Saxon princess collection. This was very disappointing. The Jet collection was good to see. This was the main reason for our visit so all good in the end.

This was quite an interesting museum but fairly old fashioned i.e. lots of exhibits in glass cases and very little interaction for the visitor. There was also a tremendous amount of 'stuff' so we felt a bit overwhelmed, more organisation would have helped. It is worth a visit though, particularly to see the dinosaur bones and the mummified human hand!

If you love Whitby you must visit this Museum. All the history of Whitby and the people who lived there. Lots of Jet gems to see. They have got everything in this museum children's toys, Victorian/Edwardian fashion even a cursed dead man's hand. The gardens are great with wonderful views over Whitby.

Having recently read Roger Osborne's book on geology I wanted to go back to see the fossils. Worth it for that section alone. One of the staff, seeing my interest, came over to talk about his thoughts. Temporary exhibition on the Saxon princess also worth a look. My favourite piece is the amazing jet and ammonite chess board. Have just... More

This is an Edwardian museum that has never really been updated and now is an amazing example of what museums used to be...some of the signage is original too! Great taxidermy and since Whitby was a Whaling community amazing stuff from all parts of the world, oh and Dr Merryweather's Tempest Prognosticator (a kind of weather forecasting machine involving slugs,bells... Set in Pannett Park, which itself is worth a visit, the museum houses so many interesting collections, take time to see everything then enjoy a cuppa in the friendly little basement cafe!

One of the few things in York/Whitby that I felt was reasonably priced for the amount of time you could spend there! There is a LOT of stuff to see. I would say this museum is less suited to small children, because it's a proper old style museum, similar to the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford. Lots of things in... More

You really need to allocate quite a bit of time here, chose a rainy or miserable day. Covered all aspects of whitbys history and maritime past. Very interesting with good descriptions.
