The handsome 17th century house on the harbour belonged to Cook's master, the Quaker shipowner, John Walker. It was here in the attic that the family lodged thier apprentices when not at sea serving the London coal trade. The Museum's rich collection celebrates Cook's achievements and the work of those who sailed with him - sailors, scientists and artists.See letters in Cook's own hand, original paintings and drawings, ship models and maps, and strange objects from newly discovered lands.Special Exhibition for 2013 - 'Oceans apart! Canoes of the Pacific'Our new exhibition brings together paintings and plans, original artefacts and models showing the variety of canoes and catamarans which astounded Cook and his men with their beauty, speed and manoevrability. This is a very well laid out exposition of the life & adventures of one of Britain's true heroes. What a life....what a hero.

This museum is also about those whom Capt Cook lived and worked with when he was an apprentice seaman. There are numerous exhibits by Banks and the artists who accompanied him on his many voyages in order to capture the botanical species on paper. There are also some interesting letters which are worth reading, just to capture the grammar of... More

This was a fascinating museum with lots of information about Captain Cook. The museum is based in the building where Cook was apprenticed and lived. The old maps were especially interesting. Well worth a visit.

An unplanned visit to this museum made our day in Whitby. The museum attendants were the kindest, most thoughtful people and made the experience one to remember for all the right reasons. The exhibits and house itself are kept in first class condition. Lots of information, original documents and portraits beautifully displayed. The visit from start to end was a... More

If you are a fan of maritime history and lore, you'll enjoy this little museum. The workers are friendly and eager to share their knowledge with you. Depending on how much of the provided info you read will determine if you spend a little or a lot of time.

My boyfriend and I went to the museum on a day trip to Whitby. We spent nearly 3 hours in! There is a lot to see and a lot to read. It's very interesting, but you need to have quite a bit of time in order to appreciate it.

We've been meaning to visit for ages and were very glad that we did, some rooms are set out as they would have been in Cooks day and others have models and artifacts. Sign up as a taxpayer and your ticket lasts for 12 months!

The house in itself was lovely to go round but unless you want to spend a lot of time reading then give it a miss but I do not see what more they could do really
