The Bowder Stone is not in Keswick, but half way down the Borrowdale Valley, which is accessed through Keswick town. The Stone itself is said by some to be the deposit of a huge glacier that formed the Lake District. It is broken in two with wooden steps up onto the top of the larger piece. It is a natural... More

had a look at the rock when driving near the area in the lakes - the book described a house-sized boulder but what we saw was smaller. still the way it balanced on its edge was really strange and cool - how??!!! there are some wooden stairs which you can use to climb to the top, though there is not... Definitely worth a visit. Climb up the steep stairs and make your way to the top, be careful as its a long way down and not suitable for children.

Nice walk through a quiet forest and then a lot of interest in the shape of the bowder stone! We had some fun taking silly photo's and would imagine children would really enjoy climbing around and taking the stairs to the top!

Never come across this until my partner told me about it, took our kids. Very impressed, there is a small gap underneath and you can reach through from either side and hold hands!! Only advice would be take something to lie on if you want to try this!!

This feature stands alone so there is not much else to see in the immediate vicinity. It is a feature left from the glacial age.The custom is to bend down and shake hands through the gap at the bottom of the rock.

The bowder stone is an impressive 2000 ton erratic boulder which rest in a state of delicate balance. It is definatly something to see & worth a visit. You dont need long to see it probably about 30mins.

Car park too expensive as we did not need a 2 hour stay - think it was £3.80 for 2 hours and we were probably only there for half an hour.
