This attraction is opened to the public on certain weekends by a friendly group of volunteers so check before visiting. The walk up the staircases takes only a few minutes (no charge), but it is an ideal way to access the extensive Western Heights area which would take days to explore fully.

This is an amazing piece of our history. Why is it not open more often? Why does nobody promote it more? It's incredible!

Sadly the Grand Shaft and Drop Redoubt are only open on certain weekends and open days. It is owned by English Heritage, but all maintenance and operations are undertaken by local "Western Heights Preservation Society". If English Heritage made more of an effort the Western Heights could be an amazing attraction rivalling that of Dover Castle...

This Dover feature is lovingly tended by local people and offers a real view of life as it was in Dover. A good place to have a look at some history, and great if combined with the Castle and the seafront.
