Situated in Higher Poynton, the museum is on the site of the old Anson Colliery. Engine enthusiasts from all over the world come to visit this fascinating museum. However, it is increasingly becoming a "must visit" attraction for non-enthusiasts too and won the "Visitors Choice" award (voted for by the public) when they were asked "where would you take a visitor to the Macclesfield area"? As well as the largest collection of engines in Europe, the museum also has changing displays of local history items such as photographs, maps, mementos and keepsakes from the Vernon Estate and Anson Colliery. « less

Well worth a visit if you are interested in all types of engines. It is also a great venue for local history. I will be going back for sure

Admittedly, our party of 11 is biased towards old engines, but this museum is interesting for all levels of engine enthusiasm! Seeing so many of the engines running, and the outdoor craft area full of historical treasures made for a thoroughly enjoyable day out. The explanations, geared to the knowledge level of the visitors, were fascinating. Well worth a visit.

This is a wonderfully deep museum, taking you through several key stages in the development of the internal combustion engine, from inception through to the modern day. It specialises in firms local to the north-west (Mirrlees, Gardner) but features other models as well, and some mighty old steam engines. The star attraction, obviously, is the seemingly endless parade of engines:... More

My 9 year girl and 8 year old boy loved it two hours flew by as they had never seen anything like it the Blacksmith and the Bodger fascinated them. They are looking forward to "show and Tell" at school so then can tell their class Stephen Benson

I thought this would probably be just "boys toys" and took my book for when my husband was looking at things in detail - 5 hours later it was still in the car and I was hooked! A great day out, lots to see, the engines, the history, working crafts and a fantastic team of volunteers to answer any questions... More

Just visited on the evening opening and had a great visit, as a qualified engineer I found this absolutely fascinating, as did both my 11 and 13 year old. The staff were very friendly and helpful and even fired up a couple of the engines just for us. It was incredible to see an often forgotten bit of power generation... More

My previous favourite museum was the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, but this beats it hollow! My wife and I were equally fascinated by the machines and the personal stories behind them. Everybody, adults and children, clearly loved the demonstrations as much as we did. The initial thump of the large gas engine as it started was just right to... More

Lived nearby over 40 years and never knew it existed! Publicity needs upgrading. First-class venue with some remarkable exhibits, up-and-running, not rusting away in the grass. And a remarkable insight into the industrial heritage of the area. Heartily recommended

Well, what a surprise!! We spent the first day of our honeymoon at Anson Engine Museum and I have to admit, I thought it would be old men, anoraks and engines, but was very wrong!! The museum was fascinating for the whole family and I got quite caught up in the excitement of the shouts for another engine 'firing up'!... More

Having been a Fred Dibnah fan since a kid and having a Dad who worked in engineering I just had to check out this attraction as it was on my doorstep. Despite being on the edge of Poynton, its feels like its in the middle of nowhere and is a little tricky to find. If you drive down a long... More
