Pilar´s cooking classes, held in La Casa de Los Sabores (House of Flavors), are set in her spacious, newly remodeled traditionally styled Oaxacan kitchen. In a warm and inviting atmosphere, you will learn to create the traditional Oaxacan dishes of your choice, made famous throughout Mexico and spreading worldwide. Shared and private classes include an explanation about the ingredients, a tour to the local market, hand-made meal preparation, mezcal tasting and, of course, the five course meal you prepared which you get to enjoy at the end of the class. Pilar will teach you her family´s generations-old cooking secrets so you can learn and enjoy a Oaxacan culinary legacy. « less

Our half day with Pilar was truly one of the great highlights of our trip. While it has been three months since our trip to Oaxaca, we still think about the class on nearly a daily basis. Pilar is a wonderfully warm and sharing person, and she is tremendously skilled and experienced. We loved the market tour, the cooking, the... More

Many other reviews have given detailed overviews of the class from start to finish so I will try to add something new! I am already quite familiar with Mexican cooking and I was mostly looking for a way to learn a little more about Oaxacan cooking and have a delicious lunch - both of my goals were accomplished with Pilar's... If you're headed to Oaxaca, it is likely that one of your motivations is to enjoy the cuisine in this center of Mexican culture. If that is the case, I highly recommend that you try one of the local cooking schools. There are two that are most prominent. We went to both, and appreciated them both for very different reasons.... My husband and I took a cooking class here during our recent trip to Oaxaca. It was a great experience. We began with a shopping trip to a small local market (one we wouldn't have found on our own) where Pilar knew the vendors and we learned a lot about local ingredients. In Pilar's beautiful kitchen, we cooked a terrific... More

I had never taken a cooking class in Oaxaca. In fact, this was my first trip to Mexico and Oaxaca. I feel that I really lucked out with Pilar. The trip to the market, La Merced, was very informative and we met the vendors and Pilar explained what she was buying and what is was for. Back at her beautiful... More

This was my second cooking class during my 10 days in Oaxaca. I loved that the class size was small--only 5 people including myself and that we visited La Merced market which is smaller compared with .other markets downtown and devoted only to organic food..Chef Pilar did a great job of explaining what she was buying and the tour included... Although I've traveled to Oaxaca on a variety of occasions, this was my first interaction with Pilar Cabrera and her cooking school. I, too, teach Mexican cooking in Denver and so my expectations were not extraordinarily high in terms of learning something new; however, Chef Pilar knocked my socks off! Her approach to both the cuisine, and the culture, of... More

Even after many years of travelling to Oaxaca there are so many more layers of their culinary treasures to discover. That's why I registered for a cooking class with Pilar Cabrera. Classes commence at the neighbourhood Merced market, where we were introduced to the varied indigenous ingredients used in Oaxacan cuisine. We purchased some, we tasted others, while Pilar talked... This experience with Chef Pilar was great. With great patience and friendliness, she shared her home and her talents with a group of ten as we made a number of dishes. The food was tasty, the company fun, and we HIGHLY recommend that others take advantage of this opportunity.

We thoroughly enjoyed our fascinating and educational trip to the market, followed by an interesting couple of hours in Pilar's kitchen and then a wonderful lunch. At the market, Pilar taught our group of six about the fruits, vegetables, herbs and chiles we would be using to prepare our meal. The kitchen in her lovely home was perfectly set up... More
