The ethnobotanical garden has a wide variety of indigenous and native plants and trees from all over Mexico, with an emphasis on Oaxaca State. There is an English language tour, and our guide (Diego) was outstanding, a fount of knowledge about the flora, avifauna and history of the gardens and Oaxaca.

Hour long tour. We were lucky in that we were the only people on the tour so we got to determine the pace of the tour. You get to see plants from all over the state of Oaxaca and you get some history of the convent. At the end of the tour they have a vegetable garden where you get... More

For lovers of plants and gardens this is a great place to visit. We learned a great deal about the plants of Mexico and it is such a lovely place to see. Good tour available in English.

We did the English guided tour on Tuesday with Diego and it was absolutely brilliant! I'm not particularly knowledge about plants and gardening (more my boyfriend's scene) but this was like a nature trip, Oaxacan history lesson and food class all in one. Even if you have no interest in gardening or plants, this is a fascinating tour and a... More

My wife is a Master Gardener, so this was an obvious stop. What we weren't prepared for was the "ethno" part -- this was a most interesting tour explaining HOW these plants were (and are) used by Oaxacans. A terrific collection. Access is only by guided tour, of which there are only 3 in English each week. If you speak... More

The times of the tour mean that you are standing under the blazing mid-day sun for several hours. One lady on our tour fainted, and everyone else was pretty miserable. More than half of us left before the end of the tour. Why they don't allow you to visit on your own, or have early morning or late afternoon tours,... More

This is adjacent of the Santo Domingo Church and the cultural centre which is simply a must to visit. The cultural centre and etnobotanical gardens are huge and worth the entrance fee.

The tour was tremendously interesting by the English speaking guide. The garden is truly amazing and it is hard to imagine that this was a former garbage dump in the city. I found the tour too short and would have liked to stay longer, which was not possible because of having to stay with the group.

This place is just so interesting. Here you have a guide who explain you the amazing biological diversity of plants in Oaxaca and how were they used by the indigenous. If want some juicy histories and facts to tell all your friends back to home this is an obligated visit. Be careful, there are not open tours yet, they have... More

I highly recommend this way to see the Botanical Gardens as you can see quite easily how the gardens are laid out. This will only work for you if you don't have the need to read what each species of plant might be.
