It was nice to see but we were not allowed in, no one is except students and teachers. Very greek temple in style, the scene of many battles between students and Batistas police.
A stop at the University of Havana is a MUST on your Havana itinerary! A very easy walk from nearby Hotel Nacional and Havana Libre, the university's courtyard offers a quiet escape from the noisy city.
As others have mentioned, the facade/main building and the Alma Mater statue and stairs in front of it are simply amazing. However, once you...

It was a real treat to tour the campus and speak with a faculty member. The campus is pretty and the entrance has a wonderful view.
A bustling cosmopolitan university with a rich history. Strolling around the campus is recommended, but if that's not possible, just a drive through should be on your list when visiting La Habana.
If I'm in a new city I always try and visit the local university. I had the opportunity to walk around the University of Havana and enjoyed getting to see this center for learning in Cuba. It's a beautiful set of buildings, including the National Museum of Natural History (but don't expect too much: the museum is small and really humble in terms of pieces, but with loads of (?) origamis). After a few hours with a group of friends from Brazil meeting students and just having fun outdoors in a beautiful night I was able to get a sense of the great space and all sort of people that are lucky to attent such a great institution.
I took a short course here, and it was a very interesting experience. It's a great way to meet locals, and they offer a lot of interesting classes that cost next to nothing. Also, my classroom had a Soviet-era feel, and it was interesting to have a sense of that bygone era.
The University of Havana Campus is simply beautiful and well worth walking through. You get a feeling of what Cuban College students are like, plus get to admire all the beautiful buildings/statues. Its Free, Centrally located and doesnt take much of your time. Its Great for quick rest stop and photo taking.
