Packed with both tourists, and somewhat gimicky 'locals' all portraying different faces of Cuba past (who you can photograph either surreptitiously, or openly and for a fee), but nonetheless a great place to pass a couple of hours in one of the pavement cafes or restaurants and people watch.

Start at the plaza and then wander around old Havana. It is a city stopped in time (1950's). Old cars from the 40's and 50's, magnificent buildings, most in major disrepair, grand boulevards. For the best souvenirs - go to the San Jose market on the waterfront at Paulo Avenue. Take a 1.5 hour horse and buggy ride to several...
