we traveled to the black canyon south rim road and managed to get stopped by a bunch of sheep. they were traveling up the road and between three shepherds and two dogs they were moving at a fast clip. we were not held up very long and it was a sight that we would not nornally see. the canyon is... I can't believe how beautiful this place is. The drive up was a little long, but well worth it! After you come to the rim you just circle around the perimeter. Every so often you could pull over and walk out to an overlook. The overlooks were amazing, but what was even better was how easy it was to hike... More

The road is one of the best kept roads I have seen in any National Park. As a matter of interest , I would say it appeared to have been surfaced the day before. I wish they had put the road a little closer to the rim as you see a lot of trees & with the exception of the... More

If you drive to the western end of the South Rim Road, there's a very pleasant short hike with wonderful views.

Great geology, Precambrian rock invaded by magma volcanic events. The rock then was sent straight up skyward. Nice trails, hot in summer. No shade areas, 1-3 mile hikes to views.

I've been in many national parks, and believe that this scenic road is just about the most impressive, awe-inspiring, and beautiful one in the national park system (with the possible exception of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park). The many stops to catch the views down into this impressive slot in the earth can easily fill up a... More

I had met to explore the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park for years and finally over the 4th for July weekend the opportunity arose. Staying in Gunnison made it a 50mile day trip, but there was plenty to observe and to pull over for a more extensive observation (e.g. Blue Mesa, the Morrow Dam). In reviewing the Black... More

Magnificent vistas to be enjoyed from the south rim of the canyon. Multiple stops with changing landscapes. The visit can take hours but if you are limited by time, make sure to stop by Chasm view, Sunset point, Painted wall and the very last stop (High point). It is a short 11 miles drive north of Montrose.

At first my husband didn't want to take the 15 mile ride off the highway to go to the park. We were trying to get to the hotel in Montrose and the kids were cranky. I'm so glad we stopped at this underrated national Park. The park is indescribable. You do not expect to see something close to being as... More
